Volleyball set back at Pitt Volleyball Classic The AU Women's Volleyball team suffered a disappointing weekend at the Pitt Volleyball Classic, dropping both of its matches against Pittsburgh and Maryland. In the first game against Pittsburgh the Eagles fought back from an early 2-0 deficit only to lose in five games, 3-2.

AU drubs Drexel for first win of '05

Finally, the AU men's soccer game won its first game of the year Sunday at Reeves Field, pummeling Drexel 5-0 on a therapeutic afternoon for what, until then, had been a frustrated offense. The Eagles (1-2-1) pounded a staggering 29 shots toward Drexel's goal, while the Dragons (1-1-1) rarely threatened AU's end.

For Eagles, one out of two just not enough

For AU Women's Soccer coach Michael Brady, it doesn't matter that his team is 3-1 in its last four games. The real deal is that the Eagles (3-3-0) allowed Iona's lone second-half shot to become an insurance goal and mustered few scoring chances in Sunday's 3-1 loss to the Gaels (1-3-1).

Volleyball wins twice matches in Manhattan tournament The AU women's volleyball team cruised to a pair of easy 3-0 victories this weekend en route to clinching the Jasper Volleyball Invitational in Riverdale, N.Y., Saturday. In the championship against Manhattan, senior Cutrina Biddulph slammed 15 kills, while sophomore Chelsa Brooks added seven kills, one block and four block assists.

AU, Purdy fall violently in DC College Cup

AU men's soccer coach Todd West knows bad injuries. Almost three years ago he witnessed then-freshman Freddy Llerena's gruesome leg-snap after a tackle in a friendly against Major League Soccer team D.C. United. Llerena was able to play again after the compound tibia fracture.

It took only 23 seconds for the AU field hockey team to christen the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex last Saturday. After waiting several months for the facility's opening, AU topped Ivy League powerhouse Princeton 4-1 in its inaugural game at "the Jake" in front of 600-plus spectators.

The Eagles split their week, beating the University of Maryland-Baltimore County 2-1 on September 2nd, before losing Tuesday 3-2 at Mount St. Mary's. After falling behind on a UMBC goal in the second minute, the Eagles bounced back on two Marcela Ricupera goals, with the game winner coming on a header from Siobhan Gillan in the 40th minute.

Goldberg grabs win 400 vs. Loyola

It was a Tuesday night game in Bender Arena before a few hundred people, and it only took the AU Volleyball team 72 minutes to easily dispose of Loyola (Md.). You couldn't have asked for a more fitting setting for low-key coach Barry Goldberg's 400th win, each of which had come with AU for the school's longest-tenured coach.

Looking to continue its success from last season, the AU Women's field hockey team (2-0) jumped off to a quick start with wins over Old Dominion and Richmond University. In the first game Saturday against Richmond, Senior Javiera Villagra netted two goals as the Eagles rolled to a 3-1 win.

'Redskins' is PC enough for me, D.C.

I may get shot in the quad today, but I'll go out on a limb at this Eagles, Redskins and Giants-centric school and admit that I am a Dallas Cowboys fan. Nothing made me smile more than Steve Spurrier failing worse than the Rafael Palmiero A&E special. I laughed uproariously when they gave Deion Sanders $49 million more than he was worth, and high-fived my fellow Hog-haters when Gus Frerotte gave himself a concussion in the late 90's.

The AU Women's Volleyball team swept the Manhattan Classic this weekend, beating Quinnipiac and host Manhattan College, 3-0 to win the Classic. The Eagles beat QU in the opening round with wins of 30-22, 30-26, and cruising to a 30-19 win in the clincher.
