People tend to have a love/hate relationship with the month of February. They cringe at the hearts, flowers and pink that take over the stores for Valentine’s Day, yet shamelessly enjoy the chocolate boxes. People love the pounds of snow the month seems to bring while hoping spring would hurry up and melt it all away. Whatever one’s feelings about February, one thing is for sure: the month presents an incredible opportunity to take in some culture while celebrating Black History Month. Though we might have been taken aback by the amounts of snow the District has delivered, it is no surprise that Washington, D.C. offers an abundance and variety of events in honor of the month.

After spending a month or so away from school and re-acclimating ourselves with home cooking, we blissfully forget the long lines and lack of diversity at TDR. Yet we are now two weeks into the new semester and once again back to campus food reality. Even if your excitement for yet another trip to Chipotle or Z-Burger is beginning to wane, don’t despair.

Local Washington, D.C. restaurants, venues and artists are wasting no time working toward aiding the victims of the recent Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti. Though one might associate humanitarian aid efforts only with organizations such as UNICEF and the International Committee of the Red Cross, more and more, the arts are making significant contributions to the direst of disasters around the world.
