Portland, Ore., band The Decemberists paid a visit to D.C.'s 9:30 club last Monday night, their second show in the District in less than a year. Frontman Colin Meloy led his sextet through a stunning set, drawing mostly from their latest full-length, "The Crane Wife," proving once and for all they're at the top of their game.

Environmental issues addressed in film fest

Students and environmental enthusiasts packed Wechsler Theatre Nov.1 to get a glimpse of "The Best of the Santa Barbara Ocean Film Festival 2006" and to listen to a special presentation by Philippe Cousteau, grandson of the renowned environmentalist and explorer Jacques Cousteau.

Swimming competes at Bucknell Sprint Invite

The AU swimming and diving teams competed at the Bucknell Sprint Invite over the weekend, picking up a victory in the 200 meter Free style relay as well as four top-four finishes overall in the meet. In an ultra-close 200-meter freestyle relay race, the foursome of Chris Leggett, Matt Bank, Matt Pelletier and Joe Coronato were able to claim victory with a time of 1:27.

Staff editorial: Penny fundraiser should

The penny drive, run through the Friends of the AU Library, that began Oct. 1 is off to a slow start. It has raised $29.42 of the $10,560 goal for the end of the semester. The campaign might be hampered by a lack of publicity, as some students say they haven't even heard of it.

Library 'friends': race is on track

Organizers of the Friends of the American University Library's first-ever penny race to raise money to improve the scholarly collection at Bender Library say the event is on its way to meeting its fundraising goal. Currently, there is $29.42 in the main general collection basket alone.

United Nations Week, held from Oct. 21 to Oct. 28, featured panels and programs at universities and clubs throughout the D.C. area including George Washington University and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, according to the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area Web site.

I'm sure by now all of you are as sick as I am of hearing that Halloween is just an excuse for girls to dress like sluts and guys to dress like complete idiots. Though I agree that the holiday does provide a welcome opportunity to put our sexuality on display, it doesn't necessarily mean that this is the character we desire to portray the rest of the 364 days.

SG urges profs to submit textbook lists

The Student Government posted neon flyers across campus last weekend to encourage faculty to save students money by submitting their spring semester textbook adoption lists to the bookstore. According to SG President Ashley Mushnick's weekly report to the Undergraduate Senate, only 20 percent of the faculty has submitted their adoptions, which were due Oct.

Folger production a sweet 'Dream'

Prior to this performance, it was safe to assume that the only venue for lip-synching was tacky teen pop concerts. However, the Folger Theatre's rendition of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" proves that boy bands and adolescent groupies are not the only ones using choreographed moves and an obvious song track.

Students abroad caught in gray

"Sometimes I get the feeling that Paris is a city built for tourists," an acquaintance of mine told me the other day. I don't think that he's exaggerating. I see more visitors than Parisians in this city. I've realized that as a study abroad student, I live in a gray dimension, an odd landscape where I am not quite a tourist and not quite a local.
