Banquet raises awareness of world hunger

The Hunger & Homelessness club served students lunch with a twist on Wednesday by hosting a hunger banquet in the lounge of the School of International Service building. The $3 open banquet simulated the conditions of poverty and hunger in honor of World Hunger Day, observed on Oct.

John Ross, a local high school student, won the race at 14:58.

Race raises funds for 'Habitat'

Over 500 runners and walkers competed in the annual American Classic 5K Saturday to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity and encourage physical fitness on campus. The event was organized by Jason Eisen, Erin Bumgarner, Greg Rosenberg, Mark Stern and Chad Woodworth and assisted by the community service fraternity Alpha Phi Omega.

UVM death elicits safety concerns

The disappearance of Michelle Gardner-Quinn, a senior at the University of Vermont who was found dead six days after she went missing, has led many to question the safety of students around college campuses, including AU. Gardner-Quinn disappeared from the downtown area near the University of Vermont Burlington and was reported missing after she missed a dinner she had previously planned with her parents, according to The Post.

Mario and friends back with basketball fury

Mario and friends must really like sports. For a long time it was just golf, tennis and racing that got them excited. Lately they've branched out to baseball and soccer. Mario, Luigi and Peach even guest starred last year in the last SSX snowboarding game.

Eagles fly high at 'Phil Reeves,' defeat Bucknell 2-0

The AU men's soccer team defeated Bucknell 2-0 Saturday afternoon, picking up three vital points in the PL standings and improving their home record to 6-0-0. In the process, the Eagles climbed into the all-important fourth and final spot for the PL tournament, with two league games remaining.

British rock import invigorates Black Cat

The music cuts out, singer Eddie Argos has some wisdom to dispense to his adoring audience, and he's not going to wait for the song to end. Argos says he got an e-mail from a fan who recently felt inspired by the ode-to-unrequited-love song "Emily Kane," and took action.



Speaking to about 1,000 people Saturday, Blair said the U.S. should sign key human rights documents.

Though the United States was the "first nation in the world founded on respect for human rights," its membership in two key international human rights documents would advance its position as a global human rights leader, said Cherie Booth Blair, wife of British Prime Minister Tony Blair, during her Family Weekend speech Saturday.

Activist signs book

Nobel Peace Prize laureate and environmentalist Wangari Maathai visited the AU bookstore Saturday to greet students and sign copies of her new memoir, "Unbowed." Maathai, a Kenyan native, received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her environmental activism in Africa.

In a photo caption for an article titled "Expansion of buildings underway," it was incorrectly stated that construction on the new School of International Service building will begin once a building permit is obtained. In reality, the project also needs final approval from the university leadership before construction begins.

Offbeat debates highlight tournament

Forty teams of college debaters from 12 schools gathered at AU Friday and Saturday to debate a variety of issues, some serious and some less serious, as part of an AU-sponsored event judged by the AU Debate Society. "Should conscription in the U.S. military be employed?" and "Are Vikings cooler than pirates?" were some of the cases debated.

'Fighting Dems' proclaim progressive patriotism

"I've had enough of folks who act tough on TV. I want someone who really is tough when it comes to our foreign policy," roared Sen. Barack Obama at a rally in Virginia last month. Sure enough, in this election the Democratic Party is sending a number of veterans frustrated with the current Bush administration to key races, challenging the notion that the party is soft on national security.

General education professor Daniel Malachuk has the dedication, aplomb and respect for others that's necessary to make his discussion-based, conversational classes a joy for literature students at American University. Malachuk teaches "Great Books that Shape the Modern World," "Literature Survey of American Lit" and "American Romanticism.

Eastwood film battles mediocrity

"Flags of Our Fathers" has two things going against it from the very start: 1) It is going to be compared to "Saving Private Ryan" mercilessly; and 2) "Saving Private Ryan" is a better movie. While "Flags" is still beautifully shot, director Clint Eastwood is better than this and has proven so on multiple occasions before.

Family Weekend features arts, song and service for visitors

Cherie Booth Blair's speech was a part of AU's annual Family Weekend, which took place from Friday to Sunday. It offered a variety of events intended to give students and their families insight into the many different types of activities on campus. Friday's events included a myriad of open classes for families to get a taste of academic life on campus; an AU neighborhood bus tour that took families to important sites, historic and otherwise, around Tenleytown; and a historical walking tour of campus.



Section 202 hosts Connor Sturniolo and Gabrielle McNamee are joined by fellow Eagle staff member and phenomenal sports photographer, Josh Markowitz. Follow along as they discuss the United Football League and the benefits it provides for the world of professional football.
