Primaries are usually mere political formalities, particularly if the incumbent is running for re-election. This year, however, there were two very intense primaries in the U.S. Senate races. One was a Republican primary and the other was a Democratic primary.

Seniors to begin Teach for America application process

Teach for America, an organization with the goal of closing the academic achievement gap between low-income and high-income areas of the country, is currently recruiting on campus. The program seeks to recruit teachers to work specifically in low-income areas of the country, both urban and rural.

Military veterans debate U.S. presence in Iraq

The United States should keep a presence in Iraq to keep law and order in a region that will destroy itself in the chaos of its instability, said Rajai Hakki, an undergraduate in the School of International Service and a former Marine, at a forum Wednesday on the experiences and post-war analyses of military veterans of the Iraq War.

Lisner shaken, not stirred, by Pink Martini

Pink Martini, a 12-member band from Portland, Ore., ended their summer 2006 tour at Lisner Auditorium at George Washington University this past Thursday. Founded by Harvard cum laude graduate Thomas M. Lauderdale in 1994, Pink Martini made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival and has since gone platinum in France and gold in Switzerland, Turkey and Greece.

Free from RCA, Martin charms small D.C. crowd

Newly freed from the tethers of major label RCA, Charlotte Martin's latest album, "Stromata," is her most ambitious and experimental effort to date. Martin is currently on tour promoting the new release, and performed in D.C. at Jammin' Java on Sept. 21. The stage was primed with the humble and folksy crooning of Joe Purdy, whose soul seemed more weathered than his jeans and athletic shoes would let anyone believe.

AUCC announces club allocations for school year

The American University Club Council, a student-run board that determines funding allocations for AU clubs and organizations, has announced its figures for the 2006-07 school year. The AUCC's allocation budget includes $105,345, approximately $5,000 more than the organization's initial budget limit.

In the movie "Team America," Janeane Garofalo's character remarks, "Our job as actors is to read the newspapers, and repeat what we've read on TV, like it is our own opinion." What was obviously meant as a comedic statement is, sadly, becoming less satirical and more serious in today's society.

Reaction to party bust threatens everyone's safety

Last Tuesday, DRs in Anderson-Centennial caught students trying to sneak a keg of beer into the residence halls. Later, as Housing and Dining staff and Public Safety were attempting to document students who were attending a party in Centennial (for which the first keg was intended), a fire alarm was pulled on another floor.

Renovations reveal up-and-coming Penn Quarter

Grand museums stand by skeletons of buildings strewn with construction equipment and surrounded by shopping, clubs and restaurants. Thanks to this, Penn Quarter is a neighborhood of contradictions - but also of opportunity. When Gifford's Ice Cream and Candy Company moved into its E Street location between 10th and 11th Streets this April, Gifford's employee Rishard found himself amidst never-ending construction as he scooped ice-cream cones.


Maggie Hall  scored  AU's only goal.

First home loss snaps field hockey streak

The 11th-ranked AU Eagles (7-3-0) fell behind early and were unable to overcome a 3-1 halftime deficit on Sunday, falling to the No. 21 Richmond Spiders (5-3-0) by a score of 3-2 at the William I. Jennings Recreational Complex. The Spiders got off to a fast start against AU, scoring on a deflection off a penalty corner.

Women's Initiative reaches out to men

After several years of "Vagina Monologues" and "Breastivals," Women's Initiative is marking "Muscle Bound," a seminar on male body imagery, on their calendar. This fall is the first semester for Men's Outreach at AU. Sponsored by Women's Initiative, the group will explore pressures in the male community while aiding in female empowerment.

New Marvel plot pits hero on hero

After a month-long delay, the fourth issue of Marvel Comics hit series "Civil War" finally hit the stands this Wednesday. To quote Jim Ross, "business has definitely picked up." To recap for those unfamiliar, "Civil War" is a seven issue miniseries from Marvel Comics that began when a group of immature superheroes called the New Warriors fought a group of super villains as part of a reality show.

How much insanity can you fit into a 90-minute film? And how many times can you make people's stomachs churn while they burst into hysterical laughter? For the cast and crew of the slapstick comedy "Jackass: Number 2," it's a lot. Colleges liable for suicide attempts

Recent district court cases have ruled that if a college student's life is in foreseeable danger, their college has a duty to prevent suicide attempts. This decision comes in response to the numerous lawsuits filed by students and parents claiming that institutions failed to recognize the student needed psychological counseling because of suicidal thoughts and depression.
