The Princeton Review recently ranked AU the most politically active campus in America. Sure, AU students are politically active throughout the city. They intern on the Hill and throughout the district in lobbying and special interest groups. Packs of students atttend national rallies protesting the war in Iraq and genocide in Darfur.
Candidates running for local and federal offices in Maryland are appealing to college-aged voters by creating Facebook and MySpace profiles and groups. The Facebook, created by Harvard graduate Mark Zuckerberg in 2004, has more than 8 million student members.
Several political candidates, most notably AU professor-turned- Senatorial candidate Allan Lichtman, have been using non-traditional online methods like Myspace and Facebook to reach college students. Some sites, like Lichtman's Myspace page, are created by the candidates' staff members.
Acting AU President Neil Kerwin announced this week that university Athletic Director Dr. Joni Comstock will be leaving to take a position with the NCAA. Comstock, who has been the athletic director at AU for the past three years, will begin working for the NCAA on Sept.
Ramin Jahanbegloo, an Iranian-Canadian writer, was released from the notorious Evin prison in Tehran, according to CNN.com. The Evin prison became infamous when Zahra Kazemi, a fellow Iranian-Canadian intellectual, died after she received a blow to the head, although prison officials initially reported she died of a stroke, CNN.
The Kennedy Political Union began the year with one of the most successful Welcome Week presentations of the Capitol Steps in recent years, drawing over 1,000 students. KPU Director Taylor Robinson said she was pleased with the event's success. "[It was] nice to kick off with a well-attended event and an energetic audience," she said.
Last season, the AU field hockey team had a great start to the season, winning 15 games in a row en route to a program best 20-2 record. However, the 2006 season started out with a rough California road trip, as the Eagles lost their first two games, each in overtime by a score of 4-3, before salvaging a 4-3 overtime victory over Stanford on Tuesday.
The Princeton Review recently ranked AU the most politically active school in the nation. Saul Newman, a professor in the School of Public Affairs, said part of the reason AU is so politically active is because its students already have an active interest in politics.

Freshmen and returning students who arrived on campus last week were greeted with Welcome Week programs ranging from salsa dancing and free food to the larger weekend performances of Phantom Planet and the annual favorite Capitol Steps. By far the largest events were Friday's Phantom Planet concert, held in the Tavern and sponsored by the Student Union Board, and Sunday night's political satire performance by the Capitol Steps.
This weekend, the AU Athletics Department will announce the launch of a new student fan group called "The AU Blue Crew" in an effort to increase campus support of the university's athletic teams. The Blue Crew will host a three-on-three basketball tournament this Saturday in order to raise their profile and encourage students to join the group.

It's true. Summer is indeed over. It's OK, though, because without a grueling nine months between summer vacations, what would keep summer so delightfully refreshing during those three months of bliss? The following are a few memoirs the Scene staff has accumulated, fond memories of days past.
AU students won't be able to vamoose from the Tenleytown shuttle stop any time soon. The Washington Deluxe bus line that provides services to and from D.C. and New York filed an injunction against the Vamoose bus line many AU students use to go home or to visit New York City on weekends, according to The Washington Post.
On August 25, The Eagle was awarded first place in the nation for editorial writing at the Mark of Excellence awards luncheon at the Society of Professional Journalists' national convention. The Eagle's Ladner editorial series from Octiber 2005, which won the award, focused on university governance and called for reform and accountability.
Women's soccer tops Mount St. Mary's The AU women's soccer team won its first match of the season on Saturday, beating Mount St. Mary's 5-0. Freshman Kelly McLaughlin scored the first goal 15 minutes into the game, giving the Eagles an early lead. The team's next four goals came in the second half.

The AU Athletics Department launched its new Web site on Tuesday, revamping the site's capabilities and formally introducing the school's new athletic logo. The new Web site, which features a sharper design and more interactive multimedia options than the old site, was designed in an effort to draw more attention to the university's sports teams and to allow students to actively get involved in AU's athletic scene.
