Women's b-ball gains 7th straight win: No. 1 in PL

·

The women's basketball team came out strong from the start in their game at Army, winning 63-51 on Wednesday night and putting the team in first place in the Patriot League. With no more than 13 seconds into the game, AU put its name on the scoreboard, gaining a two-point lay-up from senior Maggie Smith-Davidson.

TO THE 'POINT' - "Vantage Point," directed by Pete Travis, features impressive action sequences while showing each character's perspective in its plotline. However, the structure of the film also makes it repetitive.

Review: Perspective builds intrigue in 'Vantage'

We've always known that no two people see the same event in the exact same light. Now Hollywood has caught on. "Vantage Point" explores the same action-packed sequence from the perspective of eight different people. The result is an exciting and innovative approach to looking at how events can unfold.

Quirky dates can conquer February 'blahs'

How do you keep the spark going when you and your partner are spending your evenings glued to your computer screen or stuck in the library? The mid-semester "blahs" can be hard to beat, but here are some tips. First, keep in mind that all relationships have their lulls, and just because you have fallen into a rut, it doesn't mean you can't get out of it.

Second straight loss for lacrosse: Fall to Drexel Dragons, 8-6

Playing with the same ferocity as the snow that was falling throughout the game, the women's lacrosse team stayed strong in their home opener but their effort was not enough to prevent the Eagles from losing 8-6 to the Drexel Dragons. The game started slow for AU, as Drexel jumped out to an early two-point lead by scoring goals only 45 seconds apart at the 22:29 mark.

Carlson discusses 2008 election, opines on presidential candidates

Illinois Sen. Barack Obama has the best chance of winning both the Democratic nomination and the general election, MSNBC talk show host and political pundit Tucker Carlson said at an AU College Republicans event Wednesday night. "If you're betting on this election, be careful, but here's what to look for: Foreign policy to come back as an important subject and for the Obama campaign to do something crazy," Carlson said.

Shocking play illuminates stereotypes

The Studio Theatre is a bastion of unbounded originality and professionalism in a city of expanding, edgy theater, and there is no seat for the creatively stunted. Sunday evening's performance of "All That I Will Ever Be" embodied the Studio Theatre in every way.

IN FLIGHT - Junior forward Jordan Nichols avoids the block with all of his might as he attempts to make a shot in last night's game in Bender. AU won their sixth straight game, putting them in first in the PL.

Only 11 Eagle baskets made for win

It's not often that you win a basketball game when you make less than 30 percent of your shots, but the men's basketball team did just that, defeating conference rival Army and sweeping the season series 49-40 last night at Bender Arena. Sloppiness dictated play from the start as both teams combined to turn the ball over on the first three possessions of the game before junior Bryce Simon knocked down a three-point shot to give the Eagles the early lead.

In our own words: Excessive drinking: Time to grow up

My first month at AU, the news broke of a former student who had fallen off a balcony to his death. The cause of his fall was determined to be excessive drinking. I remember thinking this to be an unlucky tragedy caused by a rare mistake. Why would anyone drink themselves to the point of losing common sense and their regard for safety? Unfortunately, three years at AU have proven to me that there are plenty of students too stupid to learn from such unfortunate accidents.

Staff editorial: Where there's smoke...

As much as some of us despise the cloud of smoke that often hovers above the entrances to campus buildings, the Undergraduate Senate's newest proposal to "protect the health of the AU community and foster understanding" amounts to little more than a criminalization of smoking.

Letters to the editor

Staff editorial's argument flawed I have some concerns about your staff editorial, "A sick system." Your argument for requiring students to purchase health insurance is that without the requirement, few would do it. By that logic, we should require all members of the Class of 2011 to wear beanies - complete with propellers - since I, for one, have never seen anyone at AU do that voluntarily, either.

Home sweet home for Nationals

The summer of 2008 is shaping up to be the season when the Washington Nationals shake their identity crisis forever. Come April, the club will christen a first-class new stadium, replacing the depressing architectural relic that is RFK. But also, and maybe even more importantly, the Nats will not have to contend with the off-field distractions that have come to define the team during their infancy in the District.

Unique direction brings depth to 'Some Girl(s)'

The end of a relationship will never be easy, and scorned lovers rarely forget the wounds inflicted. AU Players takes this idea and explores it, sometimes to the audience's discomfort, in their production of "Some Girl(s)." "Some Girl(s)" by American playwright Neil LaBute tells the story of Guy who, on the verge of getting married, goes to visit four former girlfriends, attempting to make amends for the wrongs he might have committed.

In my humble opinion: Ahead of election, SG needs new voices

Oftentimes, in my column, I advocate a policy change or critique an administrative policy. Yet, to paraphrase Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. or Gov. Deval Patrick, D-Mass., my column is mere words, and words never changed anything. However, you, the reader, can by running for a Student Government position.
