Letter to the editor

I have had a number of friends ask me a rather unsettling question: Is it true that my absentee ballot will only be counted in the case of a tie? The answer, of course, is no! Absentee ballots count the same as the ballots cast at polling places on Election Day.

The Virginia State Board of Elections passed legislation Tuesday to ban voters from wearing any campaign paraphernalia to polling places. The ban prevents people from wearing any campaign clothing, hats, buttons or other campaign material that supports or condones any candidate or party within 40 feet of polling entrances, according to The Washington Post.

Ads promote GBLT issue

Some AU students and faculty have involved themselves in a recent advertising initiative created to eliminate the use of the phrase "That's so gay." The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network and the Advertising Council recently joined together to create an advertising campaign that seeks to decrease anti-gay language, according to the campaign's Web site.

Strategic Plan addresses more student needs

The Strategic Plan has undergone additional revisions since the campus community received their last draft of the plan Aug. 25. The plan has become more student-centric and underwent a board of trustees review during their Sept. 25-26 meeting, according to Student Trustee David Teslicko, who officially became a member of the board during the meeting.

The normal checklist for a trip to the movies includes popcorn and soda. However, if you're planning to see "The Secret Life of Bees," replace those refreshments with several boxes of tissues. Based on Sue Monk Kidd's best-selling novel, "Bees" is about Lily Owens, a young girl who runs away from her bad home life in 1964 and finds herself in the shelter of three black sisters.

Former Sens. Bob Dole, R-Kan., and George McGovern, D-S.D., were awarded the World Food Prize Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa, for their work toward fighting child starvation worldwide.
