Letter to the editor: AUTO editorial bungles debate's argument

Monday's staff editorial in The Eagle about the harms of expanding the 50-mile limit on AUTO vans misrepresents the efforts of the Debate Society and other student groups. The editorial claims that we're jeopardizing the entire AUTO program. The letter we wrote to the university never stated that AUTO was the solution.

Every year, millions of fans across the country, myself included, look forward to this time as the point in the year when the ground thaws, the days grow longer and the crack of a wooden bat against cowhide ball fills the air.

Anti-war rally draws crowd

Thousands of protesters, including some AU students, marched on the Pentagon and defense corporations in Arlington, Va., Saturday afternoon to protest U.S. aid to Israel the continued presence of U.S. troops in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere. The demonstrators chanted and shouted as they marched from a starting location near the Lincoln Memorial to the Crystal City headquarters of companies such as Boeing and Lockheed Martin.

Film explores WWI weapons under AU

AU students need more information regarding the chemical weapons buried on the university's campus after the end of World War I, said Ginny Durrin during a screening Thursday of a film she is producing on the subject. The U.S. military used AU's campus as a chemical weapons testing site from 1917 to 1918.

Festival honors blooming relations

Seven Goodwill Ambassadors will represent Japanese-American relations at the Cherry Blossom Festival next week - including three AU students. The Cherry Blossom Festival is a series of festivities celebrating the friendship between the United States and Japan with the blooming of the blossoms and the arrival of spring at the Tidal Basin.

Bourgeois sculpts inner psyche, anxiety

The first room of the recently-opened "Louise Bourgeois" exhibit at the Hirshhorn Museum showcases a golden, curved body dangling in mid-air, arms bent unnaturally towards the figure's angles. Both a highly detailed study of form and movement and a more personal expression of the sculptor's anxiety, the work, "Arch of Hysteria" sets the tone of the exhibit.

Professor urges good health

College of Arts and Sciences professor Anastasia Snelling worked as a dietician in a clinical setting where the patients were motivated to improve their diets because they were seriously ill; her work now focuses on preventing people from getting ill in the first place.

AU starts strong, fades fast

PHILADELPHIA - For 20 minutes, the proverbial clock seemed stuck at 11:59, keeping the Cinderella dream alive for the AU Eagles in their bid to defeat the Villanova University Wildcats Thursday night. Yet, as the final buzzer sounded, that clock finally struck midnight, ending the dream of a historic upset on the way to a 80-67 loss in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Prince George's County Police officers and Maryland National Capital Park Police officers shot and killed an armed man early Tuesday morning in a Temple Hills Restaurant, The Washington Post reported. D.C. resident Nicholas Howard was shot several times by officers who were called to Gill's Holiday Liquor Sports Bar and Restaurant, according to the Post.

Women's bball brief

For the second straight season, the AU women's basketball team lost a nail-biter in the first round of the Women's NIT, falling to James Madison University 61-59 Friday night. After a 6-0 scoring run by AU tied at 59 with 2:28 to play, James Madison's Sarah Williams hit two free-throws that proved to be the eventual difference in the game, as neither team was able to score a basket the remainder of the match.

PHILADELPHIA - Coach Jeff Jones summed it up best when he said the AU men's basketball team left everything on the court. Every player played his heart out and gave it his all, but in the end the team couldn't stack up against the Villanova University Wildcats.

Mention the vans to almost anyone and chances are you'll get some sort of story detailing the "cozy" interior and familiar musky aroma of the cushions. Used widely by many clubs on campus, these vehicles perform a vital service to students and clubs looking to get out of D.

Lujo Records Sounds like: The orchestral score to a lucid dream Grade: B+ Pomegranates strike the listener with their pop sensibilities as much as their psychedelic song arrangement, which provides us with an album experimental enough to flirt with the avant-garde while being accessible enough to find the record spinning on a dance floor in Brooklyn.
