Students anticipate presidential debate

Thursday night President George W. Bush will face off against Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) in Miami for the first of three presidential debates. Citizens across the country and across party lines will be tuning in, as will some AU students who are having "debate parties," though others plan to ignore the event.

Jefferson's coin gets a makeover in 2005

The nickel's design will be changed to commemorate the bicentennial of 19th century explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark's journey into the American West. U.S. Mint spokesman Michael White said the nickel design comes after legislation Congress passed last year.

"Going Upriver" with Kerry

In this allegedly very important election year, there's a lot of so-called entertainment being released with underlying meanings. Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" led the pack of anti-Bush films that includes "Outfoxed" and "Silver City," as well as a number of lesser known quasi-documentaries shown in indie theaters and released on DVD for sale on the Internet.

Delta Gamma raises money for blind people

AU's chapter of the Delta Gamma sorority will hold "Anchor Clanker" day on the Quad on Saturday to raise money for Service for Sight, a program for the blind and visually impaired. The sorority has held Anchor Clanker day annually for about 10 years, according to Delta Gamma President Elizabeth Claps.

Flogging Molly foams with a fervor

For a brief moment, as Flogging Molly prepared to step onto the stage of the 9:30 club on Monday, panic ensued in the crowd. Ringing out over the speakers was Flogging Molly's acoustic cover of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song." The presence of possibly the most-covered song in punk history stoked the fears of the crowd.

American Indian museum, culture draws crowds

The "First Americans Festival" took place on the National Mall this week in celebration of the National Museum of the American Indian opening on Tuesday. Thousands of visitors gathered to watch Native American dance performances and learn about native crafts, such as instrument and regalia making.

Unlike "Fahrenheit 9/11" and subsequent documentaries, "Silver City" in no way attempts to mask itself as being a source of information that was not readily available to the public. Instead, it uses its star-studded cast to poke fun at the president in a manner less obvious than "Saturday Night Live," yet less interesting than a bag of flour.

Soccer shuts out HC

After back-to-back home wins, AU Women's Soccer traveled to Worcester, Mass., to play its first conference match against Holy Cross. The Eagles played tough to win by a score of 1-0.
