Opinion: Thompson a true American legend

I wasn't old enough to really feel the blow of the death of Kurt Cobain. Don't act like I'm some weirdo from that generation who was the only person who wasn't listening to the late icon. I was 10 years old. Most fourth-graders are lighting farts, not wearing torn grunge pants and drinking all night.

Flogging Molly to play 9:30 club

Flogging Molly's hybrid of traditional Irish folk music and punk rock has exploded from a cult-like following on the West Coast to a national fan base that lives for every opening note. No small part of their appeal can be attributed to lead singer-acoustic guitarist Dave King, a native Dubliner who has made his integration into American popular music effortlessly while keeping his own identity intact. Those fortunate enough to attend their sold out concert Feb. 28 at the 9:30 club will not be disappointed. Read King's interview with The Eagle here.

Staff Editorial: Exterminate the Mice!

For several weeks, mice have been found in the dorms of Tenley Campus. Far from the cute, cuddly mice the Disney Channel advertises, these rodents live between rooms in Tenley and frighten residents. We are fairly sure Luke from the 1990 film "The Witches" is not enrolled in AU; aside from him, there should be no mice in dorms.

Staff Editorial: Don't burn banners

A nylon banner advertising James Gardner's candidacy for SC president was stolen from the Quad on Saturday. The thief apparently burned the strings holding up the sign and made off with it. The weight of the sign and the metal grommets suggests that it wasn't a random decision to yank the sign, but a premeditated act to get away with it without anyone noticing it being dragged through the Quad.

Racy performances dominate 'Spring' ballet

Originally commissioned in 1913, "Rite of Spring" was booed offstage midway through its Paris premiere. Since then, adaptations of the sexual and violent ballet have both shocked and titillated audiences worldwide. One performance featured dancers that were completely nude, except for designs painted on their bodies.

Staff editorial: AU makes unkind cut

The AU Athletics Department announced Thursday that it will discontinue the Men's Golf and Men's and Women's Tennis programs after this season ends. Though the decision was deliberated for more than a year, the Athletics Department never made the AU community aware until after the decision was made.

Colombian exile: Coca-Cola abuses workers

Coca-Cola workers face assassination and exile if they try to stand up for their rights said Luis Cardona, a Coca-Cola employee exiled from Colombia, when he spoke to anthropology students as part of his campaign to "stop killer Coke" Tuesday. In an official statement, Coca-Cola called the Columbia allegations "a publicity stunt ... the allegations are false and it's outrageous to believe that The Coca-Cola Company would have anything to do with this type of behavior," the company stated in April.

AU resurgent at PL swim finals

AU sinks Navy for 2nd straight win

Throughout its four-game losing streak this month, AU Men's Basketball struggled to put away opponents late - and that's if it even had a chance from the beginning. But in the final two games of the season, the Eagles seem to have turned things around. AU got 62 points from its five seniors in their final home regular-season game and overcame an intense Navy team to win its second consecutive game, beating the Midshipmen, 84-77, at Bender Arena Saturday.

The Men's and Women's Tennis and Men's Golf teams will be eliminated after this season, AU Athletic Director Joni Comstock announced Thursday. The cuts were made to stabilize an Athletics Department that has developed a $500,000 deficit during the past fiscal year and lacked administrative consistency over the past four to five years, Comstock said.
