Kollof's top-10 finish leads way for AU golf at Diablo Grande invite

Playing in its fourth tournament in as many weeks, the AU Men's Golf team placed 12th at the Diablo Grande Invitational in Patterson, Calif.

The team finished with a combined score of 968, 64 strokes off the lead. However, only 32 strokes separated fourth through 12th place, and AU was kept out of the top 10 by a mere 13 strokes.

Sophomore Adam Kolloff again led AU, carding a 230 (79-77-74, +14) en route to a tie for 10th place with two other golfers.

The University of California-Davis won the tournament, posting a team score of 904 and rounds of 301, 299 and 304. Host Drake University's Mike Schnegelberger and UC-Davis' Jay Westerlund tied for individual honors with scores of 221.

The Eagles hit the links again on April 8-9 in Easton, Pa., for the Lafayette Invitational at the Center Valley Country Club.

Men's Tennis gets out to slamming start in PL season-opener

The AU Men's Tennis team opened its Patriot League season in an emphatic fashion, dismissing Bucknell, 7-0, on Saturday.

The Eagles swept doubles action before annihilating the Bison in singles play. Not a single match went to three sets, though freshman Mark Doumba's No.5 slot match was decided by a superbreaker after he split two sets with John Lashnits, 6-7, 6-1. He won the superbreaker, 11-9.

Otherwise, the Eagles were unchallenged. No. 1 Juancarlo Vazquez's 6-2, 6-4 victory was as close as it got in singles play.

AU was originally slotted to open its league campaign at Lafayette last Friday, but that match was postponed.

The Eagles continued their domination on Wednesday, slugging the Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers, 7-0, even without usual No. 1 seed Vazquez playing in singles action. Vazquez did team with Doumba in doubles action in the only superset AU would lose all day.

AU continues league play on Sunday when it travels to Annapolis, Md., to face Navy after a home encounter on Friday against St. Bonaventure.

Women's Tennis continues to slide as league play begins

The AU Women's Tennis team started its Patriot League campaign inauspiciously this weekend, dropping home matches to Lafayette and Bucknell, 6-1 and 7-0, respectively.

On Saturday, Bucknell swept AU. The No. 2 doubles duo of sophomore Rachel Honig and junior Brandi Kligman secured the only Eagle win of the day, winning their superset, 8-6. But the Eagles would lose the other two doubles match-ups and the doubles point before going winless in singles play.

Sophomore Julia Colarusso came closest to giving AU a singles victory, losing her match in the No. 1 slot, 6-4, 6-3.

AU played only marginally better in its 6-1 loss to Lafayette Friday. Colarusso snagged AU's only point in a 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 1 singles spot.

Honig lost a three-setter at the No. 3 spot, falling to Lafayette's Lauren Clarke, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2. Sophomore Tessa Hollyn-Taub also lost a relatively close match at the No. 2 spot, falling 7-5, 6-3 to Lisa Fung-Kee-Fung.

After weekend conference play last weekend, the Eagles had an equally disappointing out-of-conference outing against Georgetown Tuesday, in which they again lost at home, 7-0.

The No. 1 duo of Colarusso and Hollyn-Taub were the only Eagles to win anything on the day, combining for an 8-6 doubles win. Sophomore Brynne Ward played one of the closer singles matches in the No. 6 spot, losing to Georgetown's Michelle DiCocco, 6-4, 6-2.

AU will host Lehigh and then Army next Saturday and Sunday.

Eagle runners earn top prizes in mid-distance events at Navy invite

The AU Men's and Women's Track and Field teams dominated several distance races at the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md., Saturday, but both finished in last place overall, due mainly to the number of athletes AU entered.

The men swept the top two spots in both the 800- and 1,500-meter runs.

Senior Sean Duffy won the 800 in 1:51.29, with sophomore teammate Dustin Ermani finishing in second place, less than a second behind. Sophomore Alex Caduana finished fourth but could not get any points for AU's team score because he was AU's third runner.

Sophomore Brendan Fennell captured the 1,500, finishing in 3:50.30, while junior Phil Gaeta finished two seconds back for second place. Freshman Brian McCabe finished in fifth place but also was ineligible for points.

Junior Will Knox finished third in the 5,000-meter run, while sophomore Rob Hoffman finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

The AU women also seized the top two spots in the 1,500-meter run. Junior Zaia Wharton won the race in 4:40.70, with freshman Julie Lynch coming in less than two seconds behind.

Sophmore Ashley Dellinger had perhaps the women's other quality performance of the afternoon, taking fifth place in the 400-meter run.

AU Track and Field will again race close to home this Saturday at the Maryland Inivtational in College Park, Md.
