Comeback effort falls short as Lacrosse loses final home game of the season

Reagan Murdoch led the way with three goals

In an emotional final home game of the season, the American University lacrosse team (4-12) staged a furious second-half comeback but ultimately fell just short in a 12-11 loss to the Bucknell Bison (10-6) on April 15.

The Eagles erased a 5-goal deficit to tie the game late in the third quarter, igniting the home crowd, but the Bison regained control in the fourth and held on through a tense final minute.

Bucknell struck early and often in the opening quarter, capitalizing on strong ball movement and quick transitional play. Just two minutes in, Bucknell senior attacker Megan Krestinski opened the scoring as the Bison continued to power through the field.

Despite a highlight goal from freshman midfielder Julia Pope, who sliced through the defense to finish inside the circle, Bucknell built a commanding 5-1 lead by the end of the first.

The second quarter brought more physical play and momentum swings, but Bucknell maintained control. Krestinski continued to lead the Bison attack, adding another goal amid a flurry of scoring that pushed the lead to 9-2. American showed flashes of life late in the half, with goals from senior Kellie Linehan and sophomore Anastasia Byrnes narrowing the gap to 9-4 at halftime.

Coming out of the break, American looked like a different team.

The Eagles found rhythm offensively, moving the ball crisply around the circle and converting on key opportunities. Byrnes and senior attacker Rachel Kolton lead the charge while senior middie Reagan Murdoch delivered a crucial goal to cap a stunning run.

American scored 5 unanswered goals during the stretch, eventually tying the game at 10-10 and later again at 11-11.

The energy around the field shifted dramatically as the home crowd came alive, feeding off American’s relentless pressure and improved defensive play.

But Bucknell answered when it mattered most.

Just 15 seconds into the fourth quarter, Krestinski struck again to give the Bison a 12-11 lead, a goal that would stand as the game winner. Despite several late opportunities, including multiple possessions in the attacking circle and a final change in the closing seconds, American couldn’t get it in.

Bucknell’s defense held firm in the final minutes, forcing tough shots and controlling key possessions to secure the win.

In the final minute, American’s intensity peaked. The Eagles forced a turnover and drew a charge, earning possession with just 17 seconds remaining. Both the sideline and crowd erupted as the team set up for one last chance.

The ball moved inside the circle under heavy pressure, but the final shot missed wide of the post, sealing the victory for the Bison.

American’s comeback effort showcased resilience and offensive growth, particularly in the second half, but early defensive lapses and missed chances proved costly.

“I think we just talked about making sure that we’re capitalizing on those [possessions] a little bit more,” head coach Lindsey Teeters said. “And just recognizing like every single possession really matters.”
