Latino youth encouraged to seek higher education

U.S. Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.) delivered the keynote address at the seventh annual Latino Youth Conference held at AU on Saturday to promote higher education and the Latino community. The conference, sponsored by AU's Latin and American Student Organization, included workshops to emphasize the importance of a college education and motivate students to do well in school.

Staff Editorial: Shine a spotlight on sexual safety

The university will once again observe "Take Back the Night" on Wednesday. The event hopes to raise awareness of domestic violence and sexual assault in our nation today. A march will leave from the Glover Gate and end with a candlelight vigil for victims of violence.

Opinion: Pope's death reveals hypocrisy

Looking out my apartment window, I see the "Now Leasing" and American flags at half staff. They've been that way since Pope John Paul II's death on April 2. Anyone with his ear to the ground or his eyes on the news has noticed that the death of the pope has been the biggest news story in recent memory, even rivaling the death of our 40th American president, Ronald Reagan, last summer.

AU Golf wins Lafayette Invitational

It has been a season full of drama, turmoil and emotion, but on Saturday, the AU Men's Golf team made a resounding statement with a commanding victory. Playing in its fifth tournament in six weeks, the team dominated the Lafayette Invitational, earning its first win of the season by six strokes with a team score of 595.

SC approves raise for 05-06 budget

The Student Confederation's $540,000 budget for the 2006 fiscal year was approved unanimously by the General Assembly, the SC's legislative branch, Sunday. The budget represents a 15 percent increase since last year in funding for the SC payroll, Founders Day Ball, Spring Fling, the Artemas Ward Festival, information technology, the Women's Initiative and the class councils.

Transvestite 'Time Warp' rocks Ward

Madness took control of Ward 2 Friday night as the transvestites, trixies and Transylvanians from the student performance group Androids Fighting returned for another midnight performance of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show." Continuing the success of last semester's debut performance, the cast took an already unconventional tradition and made it even more unconventional with unique casting, choreography and callback lines.

Lacrosse feels good despite loss

By KEVIN HILGERS Eagle Staff Writer The last 11 minutes of the first half of Tuesday's match at Reeves Field looked good for the AU Women's Lacrosse team. No. 11 Johns Hopkins, with the ninth best offense in the nation, didn't find the net once, while the upset-minded Eagles got a pair of goals from junior Moriah Linnell to trail by two at halftime.

Campus Brief: 250 attend first AU step show

American University held its first annual step show, "Genesis: The Beginning," Saturday evening in Bender Arena. About 250 people attended the event, which was hosted by the American University of the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Steppers from all over the country stepped off at Bender.

Dear Editor: While I generally agree with Jordan Beane's assessment of the latest incarnation of "Fever Pitch," it would have been nice if he had investigated where the idea for the film came from. Journalists honor Hunter S. Thompson with film

Journalists who knew Hunter S. Thompson shared their memories of the late pioneer journalist and presented a documentary about his life Saturday night in the Wechsler Theatre as part of the Reel Journalism film festival. Before the movie, Michael Isikoff, a writer for Newsweek, spoke to the crowd about the man he knew and admired, and shared some stories about Thompson.

AU community honors Pope with candlelight vigil

The AU Catholic community came together Thursday evening on the Quad to hold a candlelight vigil in honor of Pope John Paul II, who died on April 2. The vigil was held on a windy, gray evening at 8:15. The vigil began with prayers and Scripture readings by Father William Gurnee, AU's Catholic chaplain, and Karin Thornton, the associate Catholic chaplain.

The American University Animal Rights Effort worked at the Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary in Poolesville, Md., last Friday. AUARE cleaned the 400-acre sanctuary, played with the 120 animals housed there and enjoyed a vegan lunch. According to the sanctuary's Web site, www.

Relay for Life back on campus

Students from American and George Washington universities' Colleges Against Cancer groups are bringing the all-night Relay for Life back to AU's campus this spring. Relay for Life is a team-oriented event in which team members take turns walking a mapped route, usually a track, with the backing of sponsors who pledge donations to the American Cancer Society.

Campus Brief: Bender Library offers $300 certificate

Bender Library is offering a $300 campus store gift certificate to the student who comes up with the most creative name for its new coffee kiosk. Construction for the kiosk is scheduled to begin in two weeks, according to Nick Banovetz, assistant to the University librarian.

Men's Tennis wins PL 2005 season crown The AU Men's Tennis team (13-3, 5-0 Patriot League) upset No. 67 Army and beat Colgate on the road as it clinched home-court advantage in the PL championships for the fourth consecutive year. Eagle junior Sebastien Proisy survived a three-set battle (6-3, 4-6, 6-3) in what proved to be the deciding match in Saturday's narrow 4-3 decision over the Black Knights (16-4, 3-1).
