Two weeks ago the Syrian chapter of the Arab Spring took a dramatic turn when reports of large-scale chemical warfare surfaced. Suddenly a civil war that was largely ignored for the prior two years emerged as a viral public debate, and as the clock ticks on all indicators suggest the U.S. will take on an interventionist role. For a number of reasons I believe that is a terrible, terrible mistake.

Opinions are personal. This is why in instances when people start throwing rhetoric around as fact, a person should step back and wonder if their "facts" are actually that. The recent stimulus package has been just such a case.

I am in no way a pacifist. I believe in military strength, covert operations and being able to fight when someone threatens our livelihood or that of our allies. Presidential candidates John McCain and Barack Obama share that belief with me. But that is where our shared views on the military end. Both candidates have said in speeches they want to make our military even more powerful than it is today. Though I may be one of a select few to say it, I believe this idea is not only an affront to intelligent thought but also very self-destructive. I say it's self-destructive because our military has reached a size beyond effectiveness. It is a gluttonous expense we are paying for with our financial wellbeing.

In a world where many performers become musicians and are choreographed to fame by rich music executives, The Felice Brothers bring the raw style of early Bob Dylan back with a little extra trash added in for good measure. The three Felice brothers and their two friends, who hail from New York's Catskill Mountains, got their start playing in New York subway stations. This past spring, the band released their self-titled album.

As the semester draws to an end and work starts building up, sex sometimes takes a backseat. So, in my last sex column, I chose to voice some views I hold on sex and relationships.

As a proud Pennsylvanian, I have been following the upcoming, very important Democratic presidential primary election in my home state. The fact that Pennsylvania is going to get the opportunity to play a major role in this historic race is very special to me.

Girls: "size of the boat" or "motion of the ocean?" Guys: tits or ass? I'm sure everyone wants to know the general opinions on the subject. Everyone has their own opinions on cup size, penis size and how much junk you actually want in the trunk. I have done a few informal surveys on the subject, and obviously, as a guy, I have my own opinions as well.

Last week, I mentioned sex was a learning process, and the longer two people are together, the easier it is for them to please each other. However, sometimes sex in a relationship can fall into a rut. It generally happens when partners fall into a rhythm, which takes away from sexual excitement. Sex becomes something expected, more about a routine and less about affection and love.

As a straight, white male at AU, I'm not in the majority, but then again, I'm not in the minority, either. The reason I'm starting with this is because I want to explain why this week's column is not going to be about something broad that can be applied to everyone, like booty calls or gaining the upper hand. This column is going to be about just plain sex.

G. Love said "ain't nothing wrong with the booty call," and he was right when he said, "Everybody want a booty call now and then." It is the best of both worlds: You get laid and you don't have to deal with the strain and pressure of a relationship. This is not to say that we should live our whole lives jumping from one booty call to another. Some people do, of course, and if that is what they want, well, more power to them. But I find that a sting of booty calls can get tiring and wear a person down emotionally, even to the point where one wants a steady solid relationship.

The key to getting what you want in a relationship ultimately lies in what some lovingly call "gaining the upper hand." The upper hand can be held by either person in the relationship and can change often. There are some relationships that are balanced, but these are generally long-term relationships in which the couple has been together for at least many months. In shorter-term relationships, there is almost always an imbalance between the two lovers.
