Bourgeois sculpts inner psyche, anxiety

·

The first room of the recently-opened "Louise Bourgeois" exhibit at the Hirshhorn Museum showcases a golden, curved body dangling in mid-air, arms bent unnaturally towards the figure's angles. Both a highly detailed study of form and movement and a more personal expression of the sculptor's anxiety, the work, "Arch of Hysteria" sets the tone of the exhibit.

As the official first day of spring passes, we're all left with little choice but to start stressing about the summer: where we'll live, what internships we're afraid we didn't get and how we'll make money. For three-quarters of the undergraduate class, it can't get any worse.

Third dimension saves 'Monsters'

"Monsters vs. Aliens" is a relentlessly entertaining, 98-minute thrill ride; pure fluff without any of those pesky life lessons that typically accompany movies aimed at the pre-teen set. Sure, there might have been a few mentions of self-confidence and it's what's inside that counts, but if there's any significant point to be made in the movie, it's that 3-D animation has now reached the capacity to be absolutely mind-blowing.

Movie monuments mark magic

It was the late witching hour of a rainy and moonless night last December. The streets were deserted but for the idle couple staggering home from a night at the bars. My hands were starting to freeze inside my gloves and I was 20 minutes from the nearest Metro station, but none of that mattered.

'Poets' offers food for soul

The food at Busboys and Poets is not its main attraction. If you're a complete foodie looking for a unique food experience, this is not the place for you. There's no sushi, no calamari frite. But if you're looking to (re)discover your inner intellectual/activist/poet/whatever - as well as enjoying a hardy meal - Busboys is the place for you.

AU alt. break observes El Salvadoran election

The roosters woke me up far earlier than my watch alarm was set for on Election Day. In El Salvador, the roosters apparently don't follow the American standard of screeching only at dawn. The sun still had hours of sleep before it had to rise, unlike me. Our group of eight AU students - half of the total alternative break group sent to observe the El Salvadoran presidential elections - slowly awoke.

Bromance breaks comedic 'Rudd'

It's rare in today's era of disposable movies to see a film that literally has an entire theater in the throes of laughter. In Paul Rudd and Jason Segel's new film, "I Love You, Man," the comedy is constant, unforgiving and almost painfully relentless in its successful attempts to keep you laughing.

Director shows geek cred

In case you have not seen Zack Snyder's "Watchmen," which garnered an A- from The Eagle, go now - do not pass go and certainly do not collect $200. The film is a work of sheer brilliance on its own and, perhaps more importantly, it is the most faithful adaptation ever conceived and quite probably the most faithful adaptation that could possibly be made.

AU troupe stages personal 'R & J'

Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" is perhaps the most iconic love story. Some high schools read "Hamlet," others "Macbeth," but everyone has read "Romeo and Juliet." Even more than our memories of struggling with iambic pentameter, "Romeo and Juliet" shaped some of our earliest thoughts about love.

'Knowing' takes time

There must be something between Nicholas Cage and really, really weird movies: "Snake Eyes," "8MM," "The Wicker Man," "The Weather Man" and now director Alex Proyas' "Knowing." A solid premise, in the film a time capsule buried in the ground for 50 years accurately predicts every disaster over that time period and even a few that haven't happened yet.

Top 10 Boy Band Videos

Our teenage years were during the evolution of one of the greatest types of pop musicians: boy bands. We were lucky enough to experience the cuteness, the danceability and singability and the pelvic thrusts of bands like *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys. And if we were really lucky, we got to see them half-naked in concert.

Snyder 'watches' graphic novel closely

In 1985, Alan Moore's graphic novel "Watchmen" deconstructed and analyzed superheroes, setting a new bar that is yet to be surpassed and laying the groundwork for the following decades of comic books. Now, Zack Snyder has managed to tap into that power, deftly adapting the genius that is "Watchmen" into a movie as brilliantly stylized as it is thematically relevant in a time where costumed heroes are inundating the silver screen.
