Library adds bestselling books to collection

Bender Library added the "Popular Reading Collection" to its book selection because of high demand, according to library monitor Sam Reggio. Each month, newly published popular fiction and nonfiction are added to the collection. The books are on lease from distributor Baker & Taylor.

Alcohol-related hospital transports on the rise

The "red zone," Housing and Dining's nickname for the first five weeks of the semester, lived up to its name this year with a significant increase in hospital transports since Welcome Week than in previous years, creating concern among faculty and staff. According to studies conducted by the Office of Campus Life, approximately 25 to 30 students are transported during the year because of alcohol overdose.

Wii date and price unveiled

Nintendo Wii priced and dated Nintendo's next-gen console Wii will go on sale in the United States on Nov. 19 for $249.99, the gaming giant announced last week. The system will be bundled with "Wii Sports," a package that incorporates the controller's innovative motion technology into golf, tennis, baseball, bowling and boxing.

We've entered the "red zone," the crazy first five weeks of the semester when some students feel it necessary to get so trashed that they have to be transported to the hospital. This year, however, it's worse than ever. Apparently the Class of 2010 (and, yes, thanks to your Facebook group, we know you party hard) can now boast one of the highest transport rates in recent years.

Graduation rate stable at AU, falls nationally

The United States is no longer the world leader in completion of college based on a recent report from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. While the U.S. leads the world in the proportion of 35- to 64-year-olds with college degrees, it ranks seventh as a developed nation with 39 percent of 25- to 34-year-olds with associate degrees.

Women's soccer blanked in scoreless tie

The American University women's soccer team faced Columbia on Friday afternoon, battling the Lions to an overtime finish that resulted in a scoreless tie. The Eagles had trouble controlling possession throughout the first half, trading sides with the Lions as both teams made several shots without scoring.

'Stella' has second chance on DVD

A lot of comedy on TV isn't that funny, but survives for years on solid ratings. "Stella" was one of Comedy Central's best shows from the summer of 2005, but low ratings killed it after one season. Now that the three-man sitcom/sketch comedy hybrid is available on DVD, we all get a second chance to appreciate the absurdist humor of trio Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter and David Wain.

X-Country stays on top at Navy Invite

The American University men's cross country team completed a near-seamless win at Saturday's Navy Invitational, with AU runners capturing four of the five top places in the race. The women's team landed in fourth place for their event, led by junior Kate Lilley's seventh-place finish.

A recently released report reveals that the United States is lagging behind other countries in terms of 25- to 34-year-olds with college degrees, ranking seventh among industrialized nations. This despite the fact that the U.S. has the world's highest concentration of 35- to 64-year-olds with degrees.

Program offers Saudis U.S. education access

AU graduate student Haifa Al-Mubarak is working toward her second free degree as part of a rapidly expanding scholarship program funded by the Saudi Arabian government. Fanta Aw, director of the International Student Office, said the program, which started last January, is gaining momentum and will offer full tuition scholarships to 5,000 new Saudi Arabian students every year for five years.

GTA rip-off steals cars, plot

Gangster living is alive and well in "Saint's Row," one of several good titles released recently for the XBOX 360 system. Utilizing a well-established genre spearheaded by Rockstar and their "Grand Theft Auto" titles, "Saint's Row" takes quite a few cues from the GTA world but adds its own personal touch.

Japanese DJ crushes nation's capital with drum and bass jams

The walls of the 9:30 Club were nearly shaken off their foundation this past Saturday from the ethereal drum and bass of DJ Krush. Krush, who hails from Japan, entertained the extremely diverse crowd in this rare D.C. appearance. Drum and bass, also known as jungle and commonly abbreviated as D&B, originates from the U.
