Bitter 'suite' dorm decorations for triples

As freshmen make the transition to dorm life and upperclassmen make the transition to suite life, some stylish students realize that a small space can provide ample opportunities for big design. Whether in doubles, triples or suites, these students demonstrate their decorative and organizational prowess. The Eagle's MIA STEINLE investigates.

Roommates: Ryan Rosoff, Kogod '10, and Louis Peterson, SPA '10 Hall: McDowell Type of Room: Triple

Like other dorm dwellers, Rosoff and Peterson noted a lack of storage space in their triple. Realizing the necessity of building up to make more floor space, they stacked their bookcases and lofted their beds. Peterson pointed to the unsteadiness of their lofts as a negative. "Every time our roommate climbs into bed, it shakes so much that the lamp turns on and off," he said. "It's not pleasant, but we make do."

Roommate: Daryn Koo, CAS '09 Hall: Centennial Type of Room: Suite

Koo, who lived in Anderson last year, said she and her three roommates moved to Centennial for more space and comfort. "I wanted to make my bed like a couch so people could lounge and hang out," she said. She cites large beds as a plus to suite living, but adds that storage space is tight. "We thought that [the suites] would be bigger [than dorms], but there's not that much of a difference," Koo said.

Roommates: Elly Bennet, SIS '10, Jenn Spiker, SPA '10, and Mary Schellentrager, SPA '10 Hall: Anderson Type of Room: Triple

A lack of square footage didn't prevent these Anderson residents from expressing their styles. Spiker estimates a collection of five blankets and seven pillows on her bed, while Schellentrager has covered the walls with her posters. "It worked out really well," said Bennett of the triple. "We could use another closet though."

Roommate: Daniela Bensky, SIS '10 Hall: Leonard Type of Room: Double

Far from home, Bensky stressed the importance of creating a "homey" atmosphere in her room. "I come from Finland, so I couldn't bring anything. I wanted to imitate my room from home," she said. With a rosy pink bed cover, courtesy of Mom, Bensky hoped to make her space feel "classic, feminine and romantic."

Roommates: Brittany Macomber, Kogod '10, and Jessica Staff, CAS '10 Hall: Letts Type of Room: Triple

Macomber and Staff, two-thirds of a Letts triple, infused their room with plenty of color, covering the walls with posters to mask the cinderblock's "jail" feeling. Staff credits some early research for her design inspiration. "This is how they had the triples at orientation, so I took pictures because those rooms didn't look horrible and oppressive," she said.
