Plans to build housing condominiums and parking garages next to the proposed Southeast D.C. baseball stadium seem doomed, as District officials have offered the developer nearly $1 million to back out of the deal, according to The Washington Post.
Herbert S. Miller, the developer in charge of the proposed housing and parking deal, was given a contract by the D.C. Sports and Entertainment Commission to build two 13-foot towers next to the stadium, The Post reported. However, the contract requires that the commission pay Miller a $990,000 buyout if the project falls through.
Miller has until Wednesday to sign the agreement, according to The Post. Once signed, Washington Nationals majority owner Theodore N. Lerner has to approve the agreement. Lerner opposes the agreement because he fears it will stall the 2008 opening of the park.
