Spinach maker recalls products due to E. coli concerns
Consumers are warned not to consume any fresh spinach or any products containing fresh spinach because spinach products may contain a strain of the E. coli virus, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
Natural Selection Foods LLC have recalled all of their spinach products containing "best if used by dates" ranging from Aug. 17 to Oct. 1.
The exact cause of the E. coli outbreak is unknown. However, some officials believe that the E. coli, which is naturally found in a cow's intestinal track, was accidentally transferred to the spinach when it was sprayed with a fertilizer that contained cow manure, according to The Washington Post.
E. coli causes diarrhea and bloody stools, but some people can develop a form of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be deadly, especially in younger and older patients, according to the FDA.
Ford's reorganization plan fails to impress Wall Street
Ford stocks dipped over 10 percent after Ford announced its major reorganization plan, which includes large cuts to non-union work forces, the Associated Press reported.
Ford's plan, unveiled on Friday, calls for cutting 10,000 workers and offering all 75,000 non-unionized workers buy-out plans, the AP reported. Ford is hoping the new plan will help the company save over $5 billion by 2008.
Ford has recently suffered from a shift in the auto market away from trucks and sports utility vehicles to cars. In addition, Ford subsidiaries, such as the luxury auto line Jaguar, have been losing money, according to the AP.
Ford officials remain optimistic that the long-term benefits of the reorganization plan will outweigh the short-term costs.
"I think the announcements and the plans that our senior management announced yesterday are appropriate to address the challenges that we are facing at this point in time," Ford spokeswoman Becky Sanch told the AP.
