Cool steps 'Stomp' out clich? Hollywood plot

How entertaining moviegoers find a film often depends on their level of expectations. People are much less likely to enjoy a movie if they have high hopes for it than if they don't really know anything about it. It's harder to surpass the expectations that way.

The unseasonably mild winter on the east coast of the United States is yet another reminder that the latest vogue term for worldwide self-annihilation, "global warming," could be closer to fruition than anyone cares to realize. Like the menace of nuclear destruction, the threat of global warming is centered on the basic principle that humanity's blatant disregard for the environment will have dire consequences for civilization.

The Dream, If We Can Keep It

I had the privilege this past summer of taking a trip out to the Left Coast. My journey to Vancouver put me back in touch with a Canadian friend who studies political theory at the University of Victoria. She's on track to become a world-renowned professor and theorist, so I take her opinion with much more than a grain of salt.

By the late '70s, The Ramones in New York and The Sex Pistols in London helped propel punk into the limelight and the pages of Rolling Stone. A reaction to the failure of rock 'n' roll elitists to connect with disaffected youth - like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin's 15-minute guitar solos amid tired jam sessions-turned-Top 40 EPs - punk was a much needed grounding force for the bloated egos of the era's musicians.

... More Testing, Please

Broach the subject of testing and almost immediately there's the complaint that our children are already over-tested, that our system seems to prioritize testing over learning. But this misses the point. In grade school, we had a spelling test every week, and I was quizzed on my timetables at least as often.

Staff editorial: Dear faculty: Students' time is money, too

Though AU has a specific policy regarding professor attendance (including notification of department heads and finding substitutes or assigning make-up work), it is not well-publicized and a small amount of professors seem to be taking advantage of this. Undoubtedly, most professor absences are caused by unforseen circumstances like illness or family crises.
