Board to Meet to Endorse Candidate

The board of trustees will hold a special meeting during the last week of June to formally approve a recommended candidate to be AU's next president, according to a source familiar with the search process who wished to remain anonymous. The meeting will come several weeks after select groups of students and faculty, as well as AU's school deans, vice presidents and other university officials, met with three finalist candidates on multiple occasions during late May and early June.

Community Responds, Rebuilds

A temporary structure to house the 14 vendors displaced by the April 30 fire that gutted Eastern Market's South Hall should be completed by late July, according to a May 18 press release from Mayor Adrian Fenty's office. The structure will be a "tent-like" building measuring 50 feet by 230 feet and will have space for all 14 vendors whose businesses were destroyed in the fire, according to the press release.

Public Safety, SG Start Emergency Text Alert System

Students, faculty, staff and parents can now sign up for text message emergency alerts for all of D.C. and American Univerity, according to a press release sent out by Student Government Chief of Staff Joe Pavel. Public Safety and SG decided to implement the program in response to the Virginia Tech massacre, according to SG President Joe Vidulich.

Former Student Government President Ashley Mushnick and former Graduate Leadership Council Executive Chairman Wade Murphy, who both serve on the Presidential Search Committee, selected 11 students to meet with the remaining presidential candidates during the ongoing presidential search process.

Metro Brings Music to Commute

Lisa Richards had no problem recounting memorable auditions for a new program to bring live music performances to Metro stops. Hip-hop artists, whistlers and even a 1950s inspired singing quartet inundated the Metro headquarters May 10 and 12, vying for the opportunity to become paid performers at Metro stops throughout the district.

AU Abroad to Consider Brazil as New Desitination for Students

AU Abroad Director Sara Dumont is considering adding a Brazil-based program in the fall of 2008 after a group of students showed interest and contacted her about creating the program. Students established the Brazilian Club last semester, said Duval Guimaraes, club president for the 2006-2007 school year and a senior in the School of International Service.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visited Spain June 1, signaling an end to a freezing of diplomatic relations between the countries but revealing new tensions over Cuba, The Washington Post reported. Rice and Spanish officials reiterated a shared goal of democracy for Cuba, but when Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos defended his recent visit to Cuba and suggested Rice would eventually see the merits of that method of diplomacy, Rice rolled her eyes, according to The Post.

AU wrestler dies in car crash

Jimmy Pepper, a member of AU's wrestling team, died July 31 in a car accident in Columbia, Ill. He was 19. Pepper, who would have been a sophomore in the Kogod School of Business, was driving on an exit ramp of state Route 3 when he lost control of his car and crashed into a ravine.

Track competes at Penn Relays

This past weekend, the AU men's track team headed to its most competitive meet thus far, the 113th Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. "We were accepted into all three championship races [DMR, 4 x Mile and 4 x 800m] which is a great honor," head coach Matt Centrowitz said to Aueagles.

Equestrian team bucks up with new barn and a fresh outlook

The American University club equestrian team is ponying up for a makeover, making moves to alter the program including hiring a new trainer and finding a new barn to hang their horseshoes next season. The team, which has trained in Maryland since its creation in 2003, has elected to move from its previous facility at Clay Hill Stables in Springdale to Windcrest Farms in Clarksburg, where it hopes improved training conditions and more personal attention will help raise the team's level of competition.

At press time on Sunday, the Undergraduate Senate was in session to confirm the nominations of the executive cabinet. Arab Studies head's contract not renewed

Students expressed their concerns over the College of Arts and Sciences' decision to not renew the contract of the head of Arab Studies at the board of trustees' town hall meeting Thursday. The students, who had also started a Facebook group, will be able to discuss their concerns with CAS Dean Kay Mussell on May 3, according to an announcement posted on the Facebook group's page.
