Common sense: SAT works, but not everyone can win

When I was young, 4 or 5 let's say, I played T-ball. At 5 years old, the coaches believed we were too fragile to handle loss, so they never told us who had won. At the end of the game, right after a celebratory juice box, we would gather together and the coaches would invariably tell us the game was tied.

America's pre-emptive and anticipatory strike on Iraq contradicted the precedents set at Nuremberg, said one of the prosecutors who participated in the post-World War II Nuremberg war crimes trials during a speech Thursday. Stereotypes strain French relations, speaker explains

Combating clichés and restoring respect should be the United States' priorities if it wishes to revitalize its relationship with France, Fran?ois Rivasseau, deputy chief of mission at the French Embassy, told AU students on Friday. "It is very unjust to have this level of disrespect, which has triggered a great deal of anti-Americanism in France," Rivasseau told a packed room in Beeghly Hall.

Hallinan and Lilley victorious in 1500m

Seniors Steve Hallinan and Kate Lilley won their respective 1500-meter runs on Friday as the AU track and field teams competed at the Bison Outdoor Games over the weekend. Hallinan took home first place with a season-best time of 3:44.28, finishing ahead of Yale's Jared Bell for the victory.

'Waltz' finds feet in love, expectations

The Department of Performing Arts' production of "Do I Hear a Waltz?," directed by Theatre and Musical Theatre Program Director Carl Menninger, is not a typical light-hearted musical with a happily-ever-after ending. This bitterly realistic musical, performed at the Greenberg Theatre this past weekend, asked viewers to question what happens after happily-ever-after.

AU playwright voices Congo concerns

Most students are cowed by the immensity of gender-based violence in the East Congo. Their eyes glaze over and their stomachs drop as they sort through the complexity. Leah Bomberger, a sophomore in the School of International Service, however, transformed the horror she discovered in researching the country into a play that would reach people and convey with immediacy the human quality of the chaos so often lost.

FLY honors AU students' service

AU students' work has affected every corner of D.C., President Neil Kerwin said when he accepted an award on behalf of the university for its involvement with Facilitating Leadership in Youth last night. FLY is a mentorship program AU students founded nine years ago that matches underprivileged children in and around the Barry Farm public housing community in Anacostia with mentors and volunteers.

This time, I was walking around to come up with new ideas of how to prepare chicken. The Federal Communications Commission was among the winners of the Thomas Jefferson Center for the Protection of Free Expression's 17th annual "Jefferson Muzzles" awards, the organization announced in a press release Monday.
