Volleyball sweeps league's weekend doubleheader

AU women's volleyball swept their Patriot League openers this weekend, defeating Colgate and Bucknell Universities at home in matched 3-0 shutouts. The wins improve the Eagles' record to 2-0 in the league and 8-6 overall. More than 1,300 fans packed inside Bender Arena during the annual Bender Blue Out to cheer on the Eagles during their PL opener against Colgate on Friday.

GW business adds ethics

George Washington University announced this fall that they will provide a new curriculum for its graduate business school, a year after AU's Kogod School of Business updated its own Master of Business Administration degree program. The GWU School of Business will now emphasize ethical business practices and globalization in all graduate-level business classes, according to Murat Tarimcilar, associate dean of graduate programs at GWU.

By now, it's safe to assume that most college students have gone through our first and maybe second computers. But when it's time to upgrade to the next big thing, what's a consumer to do with the old one? One option, dropping it in the trash, just doesn't sit well with us.

Smithsonian to digitize all records

AU students who want to see the Hope Diamond or the Ruby Slippers from "The Wizard of Oz" will soon be able to just go on the Internet to view digital versions of these Smithsonian museum classics. Smithsonian Secretary General G. Wayne Clough announced last week that the Smithsonian Museums dedicated to science and history would be digitizing many of their artifacts over the next several years.

Women's soccer falls in final minutes

The AU women's soccer team lost to George Washington University 1-0 on Tuesday, extending a four-match losing streak in which the Eagles have failed to score one goal. Despite controlling the pace of play for a majority of the game, AU couldn't capitalize on scoring opportunities.

As the final pop up settled into the glove of Red Sox shortstop Alex Cora on Tuesday night, the Yankees' playoff run officially came to an end. For the first time since 1993, the team that had won four World Series, six American League Pennants and ten division titles in the past 13 years would not be playing in October.

Men's soccer loses to Terps

The AU men's soccer team's winless streak stretched to four games Tuesday afternoon after a 4-0 defeat at the hands of the No. 2 University of Maryland Terrapins in College Park, Md. The loss drops the Eagles' record on the season to 3-5-1. Maryland came storming out of the gates and immediately proved why they are ranked as the second best team in the country.

Bon Appetit does good

Bon Appetit, the catering firm in charge of the Terrace Dining Room, is gearing up for its annual Eat Local Challenge. It challenges TDR staff to cook foods with ingredients grown and produced within a 150-mile radius of AU's campus. TDR chefs and staff will travel around the area to procure provisions for their own recipes, which they will present on Sept.

Campus Brief Grad student raises $2,000 for Burma An AU graduate student raised more than $2,000 for Burma in a "Day of Dance" workshop she coordinated. Simone Jacobson, a graduate student in the College of Arts and Sciences, said she decided something needed to be done to help those who were hit by the cyclone in Myanmar.

'Sea' new exhibit

If you missed out on that summer beach vacation of your dreams, soon you will be able to learn about the mysteries of the ocean. A new exhibit centered on the oceans will open to the public at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History on Saturday. The Sant Ocean Hall will open with a day packed full of speakers and entertainment relating to the exhibit.


MEAN GREENS - TDR will prepare food using ingredients from farms within a radius of 150 miles as part of the annual Eat Local Challenge on Sept. 30. Bon Appétit's chefs will travel to local farms to select ingredients for TDR meals.

TDR to serve up locally grown food

AU students will enjoy local fare in the Terrace Dining Room during Bon Appétit's fourth annual Eat Local Challenge on Sept. 30. Nationwide, Bon Appétit's cafes and restaurants will prepare a lunch made entirely of ingredients grown within 150 miles or less of each location, with the exception of salt.


HELLO, CUPCAKES - Sweet teeth around D.C. can take a trip to many bakeries specializing in cupcakes, including Georgetown Cupcake (above) and Hello Cupcake (right). The cupcake craze started in New York and has made its way to D.C.

Sandwiched between "The Facebook Book" and "What's Your Poo Telling You?" at Urban Outfitters in Georgetown, you'll find two books on cupcakes. The store is located just around the corner from Georgetown Cupcake and Baked and Wired, which also sells the small treats.

Remedial course enrollment shrinking at AU

AU students have continued to go against the national trend of rising remedial class enrollment, as the number of students who have enrolled in remedial classes at AU dropped significantly in the past year. Twenty-six students are currently enrolled in AU's only remedial course, "Basic Algebra.

AU to change graduation

AU will hold individual graduation ceremonies for each school starting this spring under a new set of changes to the university's graduation format. President Neil Kerwin sent an e-mail to the campus community Sept. 4 that outlined the changes, which will be in effect for the spring 2009 graduation.

Downturn may affect Pell Grants

The recent economic downturns may limit future federal Pell Grants, a federal aid program, which could affect how much financial aid AU students receive. Shirleyne McDonald, AU's Associate Director of the Financial Aid, said a small percentage of AU students receive Pell Grants.
