An alternative look at sports

On the first football-free Sunday of the year, alternative sports took center stage. With the Super Bowl less than a week away, the sports media is a buzz about the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals. While Ben Roethlisberger and the Kurt Warner are the center of attention now, several different athletes grabbed the spotlight last weekend, including snowboarding's Shaun White and figure skating's Alissa Czisny.

PETA's campaign smells fishy to us

In its latest ploy since asking ice cream powerhouse Ben and Jerry's to make Cherry Garcia from human breast milk, the prominent animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, wants to change the way we think about fish. How? By calling them "sea kittens" and fishing "sea kitten hunting.

Local theaters offer sale price cinema

When you're on a tight budget, the first thing you cut out of your life is a $10.50 movie ticket. For movie junkies, though, this can be extremely heartbreaking: no comfy stadium theater seats, no buttery popcorn and no 24 oz., $12 sodas. For those who can't stay away from the silver screen, D.C. offers a handful of small theaters that play the classics or almost-new films for reasonable prices when it's too cold for Screen on the Green. Here are the movies offered this weekend, along with what kinds of films to expect next month and where to find out more information.

Animal shelter workers in Skagit and Snohomish Counties, Wash., expect to be swamped over the next several weeks as about 500 recently rescued dogs are expected to give birth to about 1,500 puppies, KOMONews.com reported. The pregnant dogs represent the majority of about 600 dogs rescued from three puppy mills over the past few days.

Carr's three gives Eagles win

It was not until a final second three-pointer clanged off the rim and bounced to the floor before the AU men's basketball team could finally exhale, having survived a wild 68-67 victory over the U.S. Naval Academy Midshipmen last night. The win improves the Eagles' record to 12-7 on the season and 4-1 in the Patriot League.

AU's Web site stays stuck in the past

I'll be graduating in a few months. But before I leave, I thought it'd be interesting to be a prospective student again - to relive my own introduction to AU in the modern day. The natural starting point was american.edu. I'm from Seattle, and the AU Web site was integral in my application process since I was unable to visit east coast schools before I applied.

Jan. 21 A student reported a stolen wallet from a locked locker in the men's locker room at the Sports Center. Jan. 22 A student in McDowell Hall experienced severe migraines throughout the day. The D.C. Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services transported the student to Sibley Hospital.

Grads struggle for jobs

Rising unemployment rates are complicating job searches for some AU students despite beliefs that college degrees are a buffer against the faltering economy. Andrew Semple, a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences who is a bio-chemistry major, said he is not worried about finding a job after graduation.

Men's b-ball suffers first league loss

Despite a game-high 19 points from senior point guard Derrick Mercer, the AU men's basketball team was unable to complete their comeback against the College of the Holy Cross Crusaders Saturday afternoon, losing on the road 71-62. The loss is the first for the Eagles in Patriot League play and dropped their overall record to 11-7 on the season.

Three state highway workers found a tire filled with about $100,000 in cash while picking up trash along Interstate 70 east of Indianapolis Friday, The Indianapolis Star reported. Police told the Star the workers found the tire, which appeared to be from a large truck, in a ditch.

It's not often AU students can afford traveling beyond the Terrace Dining Room to one of the many fine restaurants in Bethesda, Md. This week is one of the few times when there's no reason to stay away - not even money. Bethesda-Chevy Chase Restaurant Week runs Monday through Sunday, Feb.

Bookstore business still strong

AU's Campus Store has not seen a decline in sales despite the current economic crisis, according to Elio DiStaola, public and campus relations director for the Follett Higher Education Group. The company manages more than 750 U.S. bookstores, including AU's Campus Store.

Unlike many other colleges, AU is standing on a "very solid fiscal foundation," Provost Scott Bass explained during a Jan. 21 town hall meeting on AU's budget. Bass and Vice President of Finance and Treasurer Don Myers told members of the AU community the university's budget is dependent upon student tuition, not endowment.

A Prince George's County, Md., man who was wounded after being shot by a police officer in 2006, lost a $2.4 million award Friday after a jury determined the police officer did nothing wrong, The Washington Post reported. County officer David Coleman fired five shots and hit Shaw twice after an argument between Shaw and his girlfriend on Jan.

An avalanche at a ski resort in northeastern Turkey killed at least ten people Sunday, according to CNN.com. The mountaineers killed in the avalanche were part of a group that was hiking at the resort in Zigana. Gumushane Governor Enver Salihoglu told CNN-Turk that at least seven people had been rescued.
