Please allow me a moment to respond to the specific questions addressed to Pura Vida in the April 7 issue of The Eagle by Ibbie Hedrick, Et al. As a card-carrying capitalist and Harvard MBA, as well as the co-founder of one of the country's largest independent sellers of Certified Fair Trade coffee (structured as a public charity to direct resources to help at-risk children), I am delighted to sell our product on college campuses across the nation to a growing base of customers who are passionate about great coffee but who expect - no, demand - that their purchases do good at the same time.

Not only was the article "Pope's Death Reveals Hypocrisy" offensive, it was blatantly wrong, unwarranted and ignorant. Russell Allen should attempt to become an informed writer if he wants anyone to take him seriously. It is apparent to me, as a Catholic with 13 years of Catholic education under my belt, that Allen knows very little about the Catholic Church and the beliefs of her members.

Holocaust history remembered

Members of AU's Jewish community read names of Holocaust victims on the steps of the Kay Spiritual Center Wednesday as part of Holocaust Remembrance Week. "I thought the event was really great," Gunning said. "I thought having it in the middle of the day would make people more aware of what we are doing this week," said Sara Gunning, Holocaust remembrance week chair for the Jewish Student Association.

'Amityville' is so bad it's scary

One of the most hilarious scenes in Andrew Douglas' remake of 1979's "The Amityville Horror" is when the priest who took it upon himself to bless the haunted house of Amityville is accosted by flies and gets the hell out of there. In "The Exorcist," Father Dyer is totally down with giving his life to get the devil out of that kid.

The AU Track team had a productive weekend at the Bucknell Invitational, as senior captain Sean Duffy won the 1500 meter race with a time of 3:43 to lead the Eagles. Also racing in the 1500 were freshman Steve Hallinan, who placed sixth, and Brendan Fennell, in twelfth.

Remember where you are today as the national pastime returns to the national city. The Washington Nationals are bringing baseball back to the nation's capital for the first time since 1971, giving Major League Baseball something to be proud of in a time marred by steroid scandals and a few dominant teams killing the competitive feel.

Gospel choir raise their voices in final concert

The AU Gospel Choir is one part choir, one part ministry, one part cultural group and one part family. On Saturday in the Kay Spiritual Life Center, the choir performed one of its last shows for the semester, marking the end of another wonderful season. The show began with the smaller Praise Group choir, getting the audience pumped before the main event.

No. 11 Hopkins survives pesky AU

No. 11 Johns Hopkins, with the ninth best offense in the nation, didn't score once, while the upset-minded Eagles got a pair of goals from junior midfielder Moriah Linnell to trail by two at halftime.

St. Peter's Square has become quiet since the funeral of Pope John Paul II Friday, which drew an overwhelming media presence, according to an AU student studying abroad in Rome. Megan Linehan, a junior in the College of Arts and Sciences, is finishing a semester in Rome.

Mozart's 'flute' plays magical tune

The Washington National Opera brings to D.C. the whimsical yet wise "The Magic Flute" - Mozart's fairy-tail singspiel of a prince, a princess, a wizard, magic, color, coloratura, parable, allegory and oh yes, beautiful music. "The Magic Flute" is a timeless yet esoteric opera about a prince (Tamino) and a feathered bird-catcher (Papageno) who are recruited by a queen to rescue her princess daughter (Pamina) from the wizard Sarastro.

Thumbs up The "Carnivore Initiative" ... The College Republicans were out and about on the Quad Wednesday, celebrating their views and partaking in free food. This is proof that there is more to political action than radical activism. Silent Day ... This event, put on by AU Queers and Allies, gave students an opportunity to demonstrate for gay rights.
