Opinion: Being socially conscious does not make AU a 'hippie' insitution

On Wednesday night, the SC's General Assembly misrepresented not only me, but a significant majority of the students on our campus by backing Starbucks over Pura Vida. Its vote ignored the highly visible efforts of several student groups, including the Community Action and Social Justice Coalition, the Fair Trade Student Association and the Movement for Global Justice.

Relay for Life back on campus

Students from American and George Washington universities' Colleges Against Cancer groups are bringing the all-night Relay for Life back to AU's campus this spring. Relay for Life is a team-oriented event in which team members take turns walking a mapped route, usually a track, with the backing of sponsors who pledge donations to the American Cancer Society.

Campus Brief: Bender Library offers $300 certificate

Bender Library is offering a $300 campus store gift certificate to the student who comes up with the most creative name for its new coffee kiosk. Construction for the kiosk is scheduled to begin in two weeks, according to Nick Banovetz, assistant to the University librarian.

Men's Tennis wins PL 2005 season crown The AU Men's Tennis team (13-3, 5-0 Patriot League) upset No. 67 Army and beat Colgate on the road as it clinched home-court advantage in the PL championships for the fourth consecutive year. Eagle junior Sebastien Proisy survived a three-set battle (6-3, 4-6, 6-3) in what proved to be the deciding match in Saturday's narrow 4-3 decision over the Black Knights (16-4, 3-1).

After a mild winter in Washington, spring has returned to our nation's capital. As flowers bloom and birds whisper a sweet song in the morning air, new life begins. In the political world new life can be witnessed by the rejuvenated bickering between political figures and activists too weak to ever turn their battles into physical confrontation.

Staff Editorial: Muy bien, LASO!

More than 150 students attended the seventh annual Latino Youth Conference at American University this weekend. Thirty AU students donated their time to the gathering, which encouraged the youth to work hard toward a college education. The students attended workshops and heard from various speakers about preparing for their futures.

Students sample global cuisine

Leonard Hall ended a year of successful programming Sunday afternoon with its "Taste of Leonard" event, held in the amphitheater. The event featured food from all seven continents, such as tortilla chips, salsa, pizza and Chinese food. More than 150 people attended the event.

Dear Editor: The ban on smoking the D.C. Council is considering seeks to prohibit smoking in private businesses, namely bars and nightclubs. While the government has a right to ban smoking in its own facilities, imposing restrictions on privately owned buildings is overstepping authority.

Festival features films that show reality of journalism

About 1,000 people are expected to attend this weekend's Reel Journalism Film Festival, according to Bettina Owens, the School of Communication's director of strategic programs. The second annual festival will include 10 screenings, discussions related to "The Insider," "Veronica Guerin" and others, and three receptions.

Legal immigration helps

Sometimes, all of life comes together. I wrote a paper on illegal immigration, I had been planning to write a column about it, and when I opened up Monday's Eagle, I saw that Seth Johnson had given me a perfect jumping-off point. Opinion: Pura Vida campaign more than 'surface activism'

I am writing because an editorial that appeared March 21 contained grave mischaracterizations. First, The Eagle characterized the Harvard living-wage campaign as a victory won "without having to take any drastic measures." This is simply not the case.
