Bethesda goes indie

It's not easy trying to expand the scope of a medium "mostly for superheroes and talking animals," comics legend Harvey Pekar said at this weekend's Small Press Expo, or SPX, at the Holiday Inn Select in Bethesda, Md. The Small Press Expo is the premiere independent comic book meeting in North America.


Comic book heroes come to Baltimore

Last weekend Baltimore hosted the sixth annual Baltimore Comic Convention. Baltimore's is not typically a big convention for news, since it takes place after the much bigger "cons" in San Diego, Chicago and Philadelphia, but Baltimore was what comic conventions are really all about: comic fans meeting with creators and vendors to buy, read and talk about comics.


New Top Cow Comics Series

"Freshmen" Veterans of the first week of a college year know the look of a freshman. Excited, anxious to speak and filled with the kind of pluck that only a semester at AU can drain completely. An arsenal of superpowers is not usually at the disposal of a freshman, but this is not the case for a group of unlikely kids in Top Cow's newest comic book, "Freshmen.


'Jewel of the Mall' strikes gold

A soaring bald eagle is a pretty impressive image as it is, but replace that eagle with a giant one made of bronze, and you've got one hell of a picture. At least, that's what Stephen R. Brown, former AU professor and author of "The Jewel of the Mall," thought.
