Student Government President Kyle Taylor has begun assembling his administration, from committees to appointees.
The Outreach Committee will offer organizations a forum to publicize events and coordinate with other groups, Taylor said. The committee will include members of the Residence
Hall Association, resident assistants, members of greek life, political clubs, culture clubs and campus media.
"The goal is to represent everyone at least once," Taylor said. "The object is to get more unique opinion."
The Student Soundboard will give his administration feedback on events by the Kennedy Political Union and the Student Union Board. It will include representatives from the same organizations as the Outreach Committee, but individuals cannot sit on both committees.
The SG's new Web site, www.ausg.org, will include a daily calendar of all campus events. Taylor also plans to run a five-minute blurb on ATV describing each week's events.
While Taylor and the other executives are fairly well known around campus, some of the people they've appointed are not. These six executive picks are the first in a two-part series profiling new cabinet members who will be confirmed April 25 by the General Assembly.
Kristen Hamaoui - Director of Academic Affairs
Policy: I want to monitor and examine the new University College program being launched in the fall, in addition to issues such as credit transferability. Reinforcing academic integrity is also always a priority.
Personal: I'm pursuing many different subjects here at AU, including international studies, political science, French and maybe history. I'm completely obsessed with penguins, 'Pirates of the Caribbean,' R2D2, and Post-It notes. And, I can belch louder than 90 percent of the male population.
Genevieve Frye - Director of Kennedy Political Union
Policy: While it's an already stellar organization rich with tradition, I hope to expand the Kennedy Political Union's sphere of influence and to bring engaging speakers who will not only fascinate members of their audience, but offer them insight into polarizing issues within both the political and international arenas.
Personal: I enjoy witty banter and film of all kinds. 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'Mary Poppins' rank among my favorites.
Eric Friedlander - Director of Student Union Board
Policy: My biggest goals for the year are to increase communication between SUB and the student body and to work on combining big-name events with more regular shows for smaller up-and-coming talent. I want people to see that SUB is there to entertain them, and their involvement, whatever it may be, will always be appreciated.
Personal:In my spare time I'm a freelance sound engineer. I've worked at some places in my hometown of Houston, and I work as a stagehand at the 9:30 club. My favorite flavor of ice cream is Ben and Jerry's Chocolate Fudge Brownie, and I enjoy having office visitors ... especially ones that bring ice cream!
Erin Watkins - Chief of Staff
Policy: Traditionally, the chief of staff handles dirty work for the executives. Under Kyle Taylor, I anticipate squeaky-cleanliness, allowing ample free time to increase community service opportunities on campus and communication between students and administrators.
Personal: I choose my friends based on wit alone and will apply this practice to policy choices. Also, I want to be your friend on Facebook.
Jen Smyers - Director of Women's Initiative
Policy: Next year, Women's Initiative will serve as a continuous, open forum for all voices concerned with women's issues on campus. We will help provide services for the AU community such as oversight of campus safety, health screenings and resources, empowerment forums, and event focused on women in D.C., the United States and abroad. Our goals are to make American University a safer, more comfortable, helpful and empowering place for women, and to work as a catalyst for their concerns.
I love karaoke! ... My favorite color is green, my favorite food is cheese, and I enjoy theater and politics. I also intern as an advocate and policy assistant for immigrants and refugees at Church World Service, Immigration and Refugee Program.
Dave Masucci - Associate Comptroller
Policy: My position is basically to help fund the current programs in the University and assist in the monetary goals of the Student Government.
Personal: I love cookie dough ice cream. I love 'CSI,' 'CSI' is a great show.
