Dear Editor, Jonathan McPike, in his recent editorial "McCain: O, What a Pain" stated that he believes the United States should be allowed to torture terrorists and suspected terrorists to force them to divulge information. "If the rest of the world objects to our torturing a terrorist to save even one American life, then it will not cost me one wink of sleep," he wrote.

Women's b-ball stumbles early

The AU women's basketball team dropped its first two games of the season this weekend, falling soundly at Towson Friday and at home to Delaware Sunday. The Eagles opened their season Friday, suffering a 67-54 loss to the Tigers. Hadavi led the Eagles with a career-high 22 points, and Lipskis scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.

Concert benefits child abuse prevention

The Catholic Student Association held its "Strike Back" concert Tuesday night in the Tavern to raise money for ChildHelp USA, a group that works on the treatment and prevention of child abuse. CSA President Danielle Giusto came up with the idea to raise money for the organization because her best friend from home was physically abused as a child by her parents.

Tropical storm Gamma threatens Florida Tropical Storm Gamma could threaten South Florida this coming week, but is not expected to gain much strength, according to www.washingtonpost.com. The storm drifted north along the coasts of Belize and Honduras on Saturday, and was likely to turn onto a path that could threaten Florida, according to www.

Jennings, West keys to success

As AU embarks on another winter season it's time to close the book on field hockey and men's soccer. Both programs accomplished feats that would be difficult at most smaller schools in weaker conferences. And the brains behind the success belong to coaches Steve Jennings and Todd West - two coaches dedicated to a competitive tradition with or without the competitive budget.

Fat Lip "The Loneliest Punk" (Delicious Vinyl) Sounds Like: The Second Coming of one of hip-hop's most unique figures. A- "You know who/back on the block/to bust a rhyme like a four-five glock," says Fat Lip on the opening track of "The Loneliest Punk." After dropping off the hip-hop radar for what might as well have been a lifetime, Fat Lip is back with an album that is going to make waves.

ÿ Harriet Miers was a poor pick for the Supreme Court.ÿ She could not think for herself, and would have relied on the Bush White House to tell her how to rule on important issues.ÿ Although she seemed like a sure bet to be a conservative puppet, the right wing killed her nomination because they couldn't make sure that she'd be as fawning and uncritical as they wanted her to be.

Catholic students raise $150 walking for homeless

The Catholic Student Association raised about $150 in the annual Help the Homeless 5K Walk Saturday morning on the National Mall. An estimated 1,500 people gathered on the National Mall Saturday morning for the walk sponsored by the Fannie May Foundation in 1988.

SG passes bill for cage-free hen eggs

The Undergraduate Senate passed a bill yesterday encouraging Bon Appetit, AU's on-campus food service, to stop using eggs from hens confined in battery-cages and completely switch to cage-free eggs by Feb. 1, 2006. The sponsor of the bill, Zo Tobi, along with representatives from AU Animal Rights Effort, told the Senate that battery-cages are inhumane.

President Kerwin speaks about life, future, Ladner

After nearly 40 years as an AU student, professor, dean and most recently provost, Neil Kerwin is now serving the university as acting president and is actively working to continue growth and development plans for the school, as well as repair damaged relationships following a period of scandal and turmoil surrounding former President Benjamin Ladner.

The superintendent of the D.C. public school system spoke on campus this past week about intiatives aimed at improving education in a city with one of the worst school districts in the country. The overarching goal of the plan is to put more qualified teachers into schools, as well as critiquing the teaching methods of current instructors to seach for ways to improve.

1. Hot Doggs Rapper Snoop Dogg recently signed a deal with Platinum One Media to create a new line of foot-long hot dogs endorsed by the celebrity. "Snoop Doggs" are being made in Massachusetts and will hit stores in January. In other Dogg news, Snoop has a new film called "Boss'n Up" coming out Dec.

Salazar memorial service packs Kay to capacity

The 280-seat Kay Spiritual Life Center was packed to standing room only capacity for a memorial service honoring the life of Class of 2005 President Chris Salazar Thursday evening. Salazar died last week after falling from a fourth-floor balcony at his apartment in NW D.

NYU graduate assistants strike, disrupt 400 classes

Graduate assistants at New York University went on strike Nov. 9 after the university refused to renegotiate the GAs' union contract, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. In 2004 the National Labor Relations Board ruled that federal labor laws did not cover graduate assistants.
