Welcome Week is a long-standing tradition at AU for freshmen to explore D.C., get acquainted with their new environment and make friends among their new classmates. During the day, it’s all about the transition to college and D.C. life; but at night, Student Activities is hosting events to help freshmen end summer with a bang. From the classics, like Late-Night Breakfast and BINGO with drag queens, to new events, like Bed Bath and Beyond at Night and Culturefest, there is something for everyone to enjoy this upcoming week.

Time and time again, I’ve run into the issue of what to cover in “Off Campus,” a subsection of Life. As the section’s editor last semester, I struggled to get coverage other than the occasional festival and the weekly Life After Hours, the section’s roundup of weekend events. This semester, I assumed the role of managing editor and one of my goals was to help evolve the section so that a lack of content was no longer an issue.

The Kogod School of Business will bring its case competition back to campus this winter in a new format after last year’s competition was suspended. Students previously had to enter external competitions if they still wanted to compete.

Confederate flag posters with cotton stalks attached to them were found across campus Tuesday night, prompting responses from African-American and Jewish groups at AU. One of the posters was found beneath a sign for the Center for Israel Studies, while another poster was found on a bulletin board outside the Center for Diversity and Inclusion.

Public Safety tweeted at 11:13 a.m. photos of the suspect for the hanging of the Confederate flag fliers on American University's Campus. They also released two more videos of the suspect in Battelle-Tompkins and McKinley buildings on YouTube at this morning.

There are many ways to bond with your fellow freshmen during Welcome Week, but, what better way than over something everyone loves: food? From barbecues and late night breakfasts, to snacks and drinks at a game night, the offices of University Center and Student Activities provide all sorts of delicious food for even the pickiest of eaters, along with other sponsoring organizations. Nearly all of the Welcome Week events have some free food, but these are the best ones for a starving college student to hit up.

The all-female trio HAIM strikes gold again with “Something To Tell You,” a pure pop album released on July 7. It hits that sweet spot without seeming too trite, delivering on the lyrical promise that the group hinted at four years ago with their first successful LP, “Days are Gone.”
