On Nov. 16, student musicians, soloists and directors of varying musical backgrounds and specializations came together in Abramson Family Recital Hall to create a cohesive, interconnected performance that embodied not only musical coexistence, but also musical accordance. The American University Workshop: Shared Space showcased a variety of music styles from classical to jazz. Instruments adapted smoothly to its challenging and diverse selection, alternating seamlessly between various time signatures and dynamics.

The American University Chamber Singers’ winter concert, “In Our Hands: Music Shaped by the New World,” took audience members on an alluring journey through time and place right in the comfort of our very own Abramson Family Recital Hall on Nov. 4. The ensemble seamlessly linked a myriad of styles from European, Latin American and North American traditions, all leading up to a feature on choral music in the modern United States.

The Davenport Coffee Lounge was filled with live music on Oct. 21, as Mu Beta Psi hosted their first open mic night of the year. Advertised on Facebook by the co-ed music fraternity as a “beautiful atmosphere with delicious coffee and good company,” all performers at AU were invited to sing and play.

Starry, white light mingled with crooning, crisp vocals to create an ethereal mood in the dimly lit 9:30 Club. The atmospheric indie-pop outfit Hippo Campus entranced a sold-out crowd on Oct. 24. Donning a flowy, wine-colored blouse straight out of a Duran Duran music video, lead singer Jake Tuppen overwhelmed the crowd with his crisp, unique vocals that outshined every other instrument onstage.

In a world of overly extravagant productions packed with elaborate sets, stages and costumes, it’s easy for live performance to lose its essence. On Thursday, Oct. 4, pop sensation Troye Sivan challenged this trend, illuminating the dimmed mood lighting of the Anthem with his own uniquely impactful yet intimate take on pop performance. Sivan reminded audience members of the immense power of raw, heartfelt connections between musicians and their audiences, allowing the intricate details of his music to speak for themselves.

The beat to "Dead to Me" began in the 9:30 Club and the shadow of Kali Uchis appeared behind a white closed curtain. She graced the stage in a black lingerie top and black striped track pants and joined her band on stage. She had two extremely long ponytails, making something usually seen on school girls somehow elegant.

As the sixth stop of their Bambi tour, Hippo Campus will play a surely energetic sold-out show Oct. 24 at the 9:30 Club. Hailing from St. Paul, Minnesota, Hippo Campus blends a pop/rock, The 1975-esque sound with crooning, borderline emo vocals to create unique indie pop tunes. The ensemble features Jake Luppen on vocals, Nathan Stocker on guitar, Zach Sutton on bass and Whistler Allen on drums.

As I stepped into the 2018 Trillectro Festival at Merriweather Post Pavilion, my spirits were lifted by young people running around in brightly colored outfits, music blasting in the background and the building anticipation I felt to see so many amazing artists that were to take the stage in the following hours.

The audience was quiet as they hung on to Florence Welch’s every word. The only movement was the flashing of glow-flower headbands in the crowd. Florence grinned and said into the microphone, “If you’re here, it’s probably because you believe in women. Come and rage with us.”

Since 2012, Kali Uchis has risen from an unknown artist on SoundCloud to the face of the indie-pop movement. The 24-year-old Colombian-American star emerged on the scene with her mixtape "Drunken Babble" in 2012. She has also released two full-length albums: "Por Vida" in 2015 and "Isolation" in 2018. Uchis will be performing music off of “Isolation” at the 9:30 Club on Oct. 10th.

Drake visited Washington, D.C., Sept. 12 and 13 at the Capital One Arena, ready to leave the audience wanting more as the rapper premiered his “Aubrey and the Three Migos” Tour. The anticipation of waiting for Drake’s appearance was full of uncertainty. Once Drake appeared on stage, the question, “Is Drake really right in front of me?” may have been on the minds of many attending the concert.
