We're tired of seeing those monotonous, black and blue schoolbags wherever we go, and we decided to make things simple for you. We've chosen seven totes from different price ranges and for different personalities. Just try to find one you don't love - we dare you.

Before coming to college and when first arriving, freshmen are bombarded with advice from upperclassmen and administrators. Just in case you want some more advice, we compiled a simple list of things we wish we had known before coming to AU. You don't have to listen to us, but hey, we've been here longer than you, and we might just be on to something.

Excessive alcohol consumption is a problem that continues to plague college campuses today, despite attempts to curtail it through broad-level restrictions. At AU, where a no-tolerance alcohol ban in residence halls has been in effect since the mid-1980s, ongoing debate about the effectiveness of such a restriction persists.

To say I grew up in a superstitious home might be a bit of an overstatement. No, my mother didn't pray before a shrine to the Virgin Mary, construct altars to deceased relatives, bless new household items with holy water, or adhere to any number of customs that are associated with Catholics. She did, however, disapprove of taking the Lord's name in vain and found rosary beads to be suitable presents, and when we were trying to sell our house, she buried a statue of St. Joseph in the yard. Upside down and facing the street, of course.

Beginning this fall, the library will be open 24 hours a day from 9 a.m. Sunday to 10 p.m. Friday. To compensate for the extended library hours, the Anderson Computing Complex will be closed at certain hours overnight that are yet to be determined. Student demand, as well as advocacy from SG President Ashley Mushnick, who campaigned on the issue last spring, helped bring about the change.

The D.C. Council held a hearing Thursday to discuss legislation barring minors from clubs that serve alcohol, prompted by the killing of a 17-year-old girl Jan. 20 at a U Street club, according to The Washington Post. Although several AU students said they feel safe in D.C., they think clubs - as well as students - should take more precautions.

On Feb. 3, Housing and Dining Programs Executive Director Julie Weber will walk out of her office like she does at the end of every day. However, it will be her last time doing so, as she leaves behind 10 years at AU to begin a similar job 2,000 miles away at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, N.M.

Someone once told me that the way you spend your New Year's Eve is the way you will spend the rest of your year. For someone who goes out as frequently as I do, travels far and wide, and is constantly meeting new people, I find this concept more difficult to swallow than that $4 bottle of champagne your friend brought to the party. If this anonymous prophecy is correct, then 2007 will be filled with a couple good friends in a city I'm just getting to know better, a few random girls who wish I were straight and a whole gaggle of guys who are glad that I'm not. Yep, sounds about right.

Election Day is rapidly approaching. The punditry is shouting about a seemingly imminent Democratic takeover in Congress. The politicians are spending to the last drop to snatch up every last voter on what may ultimately be a referendum on the Republican Party and their mismanagement of the so-called war on terrorism, the war in Iraq and a litany of domestic issues here on the home front. What people are not railing about is the need for a democratic (with a small "d") takeover of our broken voting rights system.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, students nationwide are at a high risk for identity theft crimes because they are vulnerable to having their personal information such as Social Security numbers stolen, but at AU, the EagleBuck$ system is not linked to any personal identity numbers and provides little incentive for identity thieves.

A recent report by the Department of Education indicates that college students are at particularly high risk of identity theft because of pre-approved credit card offers, burglaries in dorms and inexperience in financial management.
