Students prep for Northeast Super Bowl

As time expired on a cold January night in Pittsburgh, the wonder of a rookie quarterback faded and, once again, the hooded genius proved his worth, as the New England Patriots defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers, 41-27.

Sports Brief: Individuals shine, but Men and Women swim teams lose out in weekend tri-meet

The AU Swimming and Diving team fell to Lehigh and Army in a triangular in Bethlehem, Pa., on Friday and Saturday. The Eagles seized five women's victories, but only broke through once on the men's side. Freshman distance specialist Meghan Thiel continued her impressive rookie season, winning both the 500-yard and 1,000-yard individual freestyle races.

Women's Basketball splits PL weekend

The AU Women's Basketball team split its weekend, beating the Army Black Knights, 71-64, Friday night and losing to the Holy Cross Crusaders, 67-48, in a Sunday afternoon matinee at Bender Arena. Holy Cross began both halves with 6-0 runs that kept the Eagles playing catch-up the entire game.

Snow lets men's b-ball rest after win

AU Men's Basketball got an extra day to reflect on one of its most lopsided victories in years. A 2-foot blast of snow and a state of emergency in Massachusetts forced the postponement of Sunday's game at Holy Cross (12-5, 3-1 Patriot League) until today.

Strong preseason doesn't secure PL title for Men's b-ball

After a fall that almost seemed too good to be true, the wintertime, and with it the Patriot League season, have descended upon the AU Men's Basketball team with cold reality. After a jolting home loss to Lehigh Saturday, 56-53, to start the PL season, the Eagles (8-6, 1-1) have somewhat regained their footing, picking up road wins at out-of-conference foes Yale Monday, 69-65, and league rivals Navy Wednesday, 66-60.

The AU Women's Basketball team lost its seventh straight game Wednesday night, dropping a 70-64 decision to the Navy Midshipmen at Bender Arena. The Eagles were paced by career-high nights from seniors Joanna Barnes, who scored 27 points, and Damarah Rhymer, who dropped in 13 on 6-of-6 shooting.

Men's b-ball gets lucky over Lafayette

Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. But the Eagles would rather not make a habit of it. A last-second fade-away jumper from sophomore guard Andre Ingram gave the AU Men's Basketball team a fortunate 76-74 win over Lafayette Saturday, and served as the fitting end to a wild affair at Bender Arena.

Waters takes fourth in wrestling tourney

Over winter break, AU Wrestling head coach Mark Cody led his wrestlers into battle at two holiday tournaments, including the Midlands Championships. Other than the national tournament in March, Midlands is considered the nation's toughest tournament, featuring the top wrestlers from each weight.

Sideline Scholars: Basketball ideals found on high school courts

I had the opportunity to watch a high school basketball tournament held in Bender Arena this weekend. The teams were from various prep high schools from around the country, and former players from the same tournament include Wake Forest superstar Chris Paul and the notorious Pacers forward Ron Artest. While the tournament was fun, it was the style of play that really struck me.

Eagles bank Ohio for fifth straight win

The formula of Jason Thomas scoring a career-high number of points while leading AU to victory might be getting tiresome for his opponents, but the Eagles will gladly take as many doses as doctors allow. Before 1,378 boisterous fans at Bender Arena Saturday, the senior forward led the Eagles to their fifth straight win, a 64-55 victory over Ohio, which, despite some sloppy play in the second half, the Eagles thoroughly deserved.

Sports Brief: Hunt scores double-double in Eagles' 67-49 loss to UMBC

The two steps forward the AU Women's Basketball team gained from two straight wins were pushed one step back on Saturday night when it lost to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, 67-49, at RAC Arena in Baltimore. Senior forward Chanel Hunt scored a season-high 20 points for the Eagles, who fell to 5-3 on the season.

AU grapplers can't overcome three forfeits

Winning a dual meet in Division I while giving away a forfeit is a difficult task. Injuries have forced the AU wrestling team to give away forfeits in the first three weights this year. And Wednesday night, the Eagles traveled to Lock Haven where the 18-point deficit put AU's back against the mat.
