Maryland halts field hockey's streak at 15

The No. 5 AU field hockey team suffered its first loss, 2-1, Wednesday to its rivals, the No. 3 Maryland Terrapins at Jacobs Recreational Complex. It was the most anticipated match-up in AU field hockey history, with a possible No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament on the line.

Ditch the Betamax, BCS

·

JORDAN BEANE Right now there are six college football teams in the top 25. Six. Surely not all of them will make it through the season with an unblemished record, but I'm certainly pulling for it. Anything to mess with the creators of the Bowl Championship Series is fine by me.

Volleyball aces Howard in home win

·

If the Howard Lady Bison see AU volleyball players serving in their nightmares for the next couple days, you can't blame them. On Tuesday night at Bender Arena, the Eagles had 19 aces, eight alone by junior Elizabeth Maloney, as the Eagles cruised past Howard, 3-0 (30-18, 30-10, 30-13).

Field hockey escapes Worcester still unbeaten Irene Schickhardt's overtime heroics kept the AU women's field hockey team undefeated, as the No. 5 Eagles (15-0, 3-0 Patriot League) defeated Holy Cross, 3-2 Saturday. Schickhardt, a freshman, scored an unassisted goal with just four minutes left to send the game into overtime.

Maryland rivals not AU's real test...yet

How much does this Wednesday's clash against No. 3 Maryland mean to the No. 5 AU field hockey team? Ask Holy Cross. Saturday the Crusaders (7-9, 2-2 Patriot League), who on paper have little business being on the same artificial surface as the Eagles (15-0, 3-0 PL), were four minutes from stealing a victory and a the PL lead.

Men's soccer drops 1st-place Raiders

With the battle for a Patriot League playoff spot tightening, the AU men's soccer team delivered under pressure, defeating Colgate, 3-1, on Saturday at Reeves Field. The win over the then-first-place Raiders may have only complicated the standings, pushing the Eagles into a four-way tie for the PL top spot.

For field hockey, going south a good thing

Somewhere far away from here, on a city street in Santiago, Chile, a young girl walks with a field hockey stick, thinking about the sport she loves, and her future in it. In all likelihood, she doesn't see leaving the Santiago streets as part of that future.

Isaiah is no Knick messiah

One of the most remarkable feats in recent sports is that Isiah Thomas keeps getting hired to lead NBA basketball teams. This when the fact is that Thomas has screwed up three NBA franchises and an entire basketball league. I understand why he got his first chance with the Toronto Raptors in 1994.

Mountaineers too tall for men's soccer

A controversial goal by West Virginia helped bury the AU men's soccer team Wednesday at Reeves Field, 2-0. A shot off the foot of West Virginia sophomore Andrew Halsell early in the first half clanked the crossbar and bounced directly down to the goal line as AU (3-8-1) lost its early-game momentum.

What would Johnny U. think of the dresscode?

The NBA recently announced that a dress code would be going into effect for the new season. The new code says that basically, whenever an NBA player is seen in public, he can't be wearing doo-rags, shorts, T-shirts, jeans and in a code I think needs to be adopted here at AU, no sunglasses indoors.

Volleyball fetches win vs. Retrievers

From the opening game to the final point, AU woman's volleyball team had played better matches. Multiple times during its bout against the Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers Tuesday night at Bender Arena, there was miscommunication between the AU players that led to several Retrievers points.

Field hockey lashes Lehigh, takes first place

The scoreboard at Jacobs Fitness Complex wouldn't turn on until moments before game time Saturday when the AU field hockey team faced Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks might have wished it had stayed that way. The No. 5 Eagles (13-0-0, 2-0-0 Patriot League) scored early and often to squelch Lehigh, 9-1, and take sole possession of first place in the conference.

Hockey's artificial turf: a real advantage

Many of us have openly cried for big-time sports to come to AU. For the first time in my tenure here, we have a team that has a legitimate chance of winning the national championship: AU's field hockey team. For those who missed it, I may have been a bit critical of their playing surface a few weeks ago.

Women's soccer slips, volleyball back on track

From the first point of Friday evening's match, it was clear how badly the AU volleyball team wanted, and possibly needed this game. Coming off their first loss in 70 Patriot League games, a streak that lasted over four years, the Eagles were determined to start a new streak.

Bison upset women's soccer on Senior Day

Before the season, the AU women's soccer team didn't plan on a Senior Day with dynamic senior forward Marcela Ricupero on crutches with a season-ending knee injury. And the Eagles probably weren't thrilled with the date set for mid October in just their fourth Patriot League match, with the final three PL contests scheduled for the road.

The Red Sox lost in the first round of the American League Divisional Series, getting swept at home. Tell me this two years ago, and I'm thinking about it for the rest of week. Tell me now, and I'm thinking about what's for dinner. Yes, just one year removed from the most spectacular comeback in all of sports, and suddenly it's just a playoff loss.
