Sports brief: Crew brings home gold from Virginia competition

·

AU rowing finished its season with a gold medal and a fourth-place finish at the Head of the Occoquan race Sunday. The Eagles took first in the Men's Novice 4 division, a classification for 4-man boats for first-year rowers, finishing the 5,000-meter course in 20:17.

Jennings' and Eagles' timetable right on time

·

When Caroline Vo was a high school senior in Massachusetts, the thought of playing college field hockey was a stretch. The current senior defender's plan was just to find a school where she'd get minutes. What was even farther from her mind was some place called American University.

Tackle all your troubles: watch a ballgame

·

Sometimes all it takes to make a bad night good is a great tackle. I sat on the couch two Sundays ago failing miserably at snapping out of a mood I had been in since Wednesday. It had been one of those weeks, the kind when gravity won more often than balance, and food dropped on my shirt instead of in my mouth.

Soccer prepares for PL tourney

For the second time in as many seasons, the AU men's soccer team will host the Patriot League Tournament, Friday and Sunday at Reeves Field. But this year has been hardly anything like the last. In 2004, led by seniors Thomas Myers in goal, Sean Albright, Charlie Koniver and Nick Zaron on defense, Shawn Kuykendall at midfield and Dave Marut up front, the Eagles entered the PL playoffs with a 9-1-1 mark in their last 11 games.

Women's rugby gives home field a try

Energized by a home crowd for the first time, the AU women's rugby team dominated Catholic University in every aspect Saturday afternoon, winning 65-0 on the Massachusetts Avenue field. AU out-ran the opposition from the opening whistle, keeping play on Catholic's end throughout the affair by playing solid defense.

Reception no good for AU's displaced NFL fans

For five weeks, I've been following my Dallas Cowboys through text messages, NFL.com and phone calls from friends in far-off places where they actually show the Boys' games. In enemy (read: Redskins) territory, I rarely see a game on T.V. myself. In an ironic twist, when the Skins played on Sunday night against this region's second favorite team, the Eagles, and the Giants played at 4:15 p.

Don't forget to give me my IM T-shirt

Championships are not always won in packed stadiums or sold-out arenas. Sometimes they can be won in empty gyms, where the only fan is a house mate waiting for a ride home, the refs want the game to be over with so they can finish their homework, and the prize is not a trophy or a check, but a T-shirt.

New blood, Hadavi's return key for AU

The AU women's basketball team began practice for the 2005-06 season with new faces, but the same approach: win the Patriot League title. Despite preseason polls picking AU fifth in the PL, second-year head coach Melissa McFerrin and her staff will expect big things from the Eagles.

For AU, PL's ugly soccer is beautiful

If you've watched the AU men's soccer team compete in the Patriot League over its five-year PL history, you know this much: AU does not play like a PL team. Under head coach Todd West, the Eagles play a technical style based on quick passing, spacing, and thoughtful runs, something more akin to the nation's elite squads than to the long-ball, mad-fray-in-the-box approach of most PL rivals.

ChiSox magic relived

I still can't believe it happened. The White Sox are World Series champions. After all the years of being second fiddle to the Cubs, playing second place to the Twins or Indians and signing big-name free agents more than a second late in their careers, the White Sox have finally reached the Promised Land.

AU mauls Colgate, secures playoff home field

What a Senior Day it was for the AU field hockey team, especially for seniors Shannon Goans and Javiera Villagra. They combined to score seven goals as the Eagles routed Patriot League rival Colgate, 9-1, at the Jacobs Recreational Complex Saturday. The win assured the Eagles will host the PL Tournament next weekend, and improved AU's record to 16-1 (4-0 PL).

NHL on OLN is no-see TV

This should have been a fantastic season for NHL fans. Sidney "The Next One" Crosby is skating alongside the legendary Mario Lemieux in Pittsburgh, while Jaromir Jagr has regained his scoring touch in New York (10 goals in 10 games). A crackdown on obstruction and a reduction in the size of goaltending equipment has improved the offensive flow of the game.
