With October upon us, we have hit the midterm slump full of exams and papers. Knowing that we must power through these next few weeks, there are few things keeping us sane. We could all use a pick-me-up, something to shake the mid-October blues and get our blood flowing so that we may focus on the task ahead.

U.S. pastime in the British Isles: how to see your team

It's that wonderful time of the year when the leaves are falling, the air becomes crisper and baseball enters its postseason in search of a new World Series champion. Across the United States, millions of people are glued to the television, cheering on their team as it marches toward glory.

SAILING UP WIND - Adam Dexter trims the jib, Ben Burdett trims the main sail and Aaron Zankel drives the boat to third place. The sailing team worked together in five J105 races and finished with 20 total points.

Sailing team takes third at Storm Trysail Intercollegiate Regatta

The sailing team navigated its way to third place overall in a group of nine J105s this weekend in the Storm Trysail Club Intercollegiate Regatta (STCIR) hosted by the Larchmont Yacht Club. The J105 is a type of racing boat; in this regatta, all of the same types of boats compete against each other, a racing method commonly referred to as "one-design.

Men's soccer falls short to Penn, 2-1

Despite scoring the first goal of the game, the men's soccer team lost to Penn Tuesday, 2-1. The Eagles traveled to the home of the Quakers coming straight from a scoreless tie with their last opponent, Lafayette. Midfielder Cameron Petty scored the game's opening goal.

Soccer goalie Sedlak: life on and off the field

From age 4, goalkeeper Chris Sedlak has taken part in what he calls the "rich tradition" of soccer and hopes to continue the tradition after graduation in May. For seniors, graduating is a bittersweet moment, but Sedlak knows he is leaving his team in good hands.

Women's soccer wins first PL game of the season, 1-0

The women's soccer team opened Patriot League play with a victory on Saturday, defeating the Colgate Raiders 1-0 at Reeves Field. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Eagles and improves their overall record to 7-5. Both teams came out of the gates flying, with each squad taking plenty of shots on goal without anything to show for their efforts on the scoreboard until almost a half hour into the game.

Men's soccer scoreless against Lafayette

The men's soccer team battled into double overtime against the Lafayette Leopards in an aggressive and intense home game Saturday resulting in zeros on both sides of the scoreboard. This 0-0 tie adds to the Eagles' undefeated record in the Patriot League. Despite several attempts to score throughout regular play, both teams were unable to penetrate the defensive line.

Field hockey defeats Bucknell Bison, 3-0

The field hockey team won 3-0 against the Bucknell University Bison, bringing AU's overall record to 10-3-0 and its Patriot League record to 2-0. The Eagles dominated the game from the start and applied pressure to their opponents on both sides of the field.


HIGH JUMP - Senior Tara Stradling leaps off the ground to set a ball for sophomore Claire Recht. The weekend proved to be successful for AU, as they brought their record to 13-6 and 5-0 in the Patriot League.

Volleyball still unbeaten at home

The women's volleyball team triumphed again this past weekend, defeating the Colgate University Raiders and the Bucknell Bison. Bringing their record to 13-6, the Eagles remain unbeaten on the home floor. Extending its winning streak to nine, the team is now 5-0 in the Patriot League.

It's anyone's game in the NLCS

As the baseball post-season begins, fingers are crossed in Boston, Philadelphia, Anaheim, New York, Colorado and Arizona. In Chicago and Cleveland, however, the anti-jinx procedures are slightly more intense. Fans of the Cubs and Indians are breaking out their lucky rabbit's feet, shiny pennies and other essential good luck charms.

While football, or as Americans stubbornly call it, soccer, may be a global game, one needs to experience it in its birthplace of England to truly appreciate it. After seeing an English football match, one will truly realize why in England people refer to it as "the beautiful game.

Life outside of the net for field hockey's Poorman

Although she calls herself a normal college student, field hockey goalie Alyssa Poorman is anything but ordinary on and off the field. For the sophomore from Doylestown, Pa., field hockey is certainly not just another sport. Practicing alongside her teammates every morning and training most afternoons, Poorman admits that the schedule is rigorous, but attributes her successes to the sport.

Men's soccer loses to Columbia, 1-0

The men's soccer team could not capitalize on its many shots on goal during its 1-0 loss to the Columbia Lions. The defeat brings the Eagles' record to 5-6-1 for the season. With constant chatter and crisp, quick ball movement, the Eagles took control of the field and dominated the first half.


BATTLE FOR THE BALL- The Eagles work together to hold off the Syracuse University Orangewomen. Although the Eagles outshot their opponent 19-7, in the end, they were unable to gain the win. AU field hockey is currently 9-3 and looks to improve the record

Field hockey suffers bittersweet weekend at home

AU had a busy weekend of field hockey as the Eagles battled Patriot League rival Colgate Saturday and Big East powerhouse Syracuse University yesterday. The Eagles dominated Colgate, winning 2-1, but lost to the Orangewomen in an intense 3-1 match up. Against Colgate, the Eagles struggled from the onset.

Women's soccer now 6-5 after loss

Bringing its record to 6-5, the women's soccer team was defeated Friday by the Long Island University Blackbirds. Losing the game 1-0 on home turf, the team outshot its opponent 20-9 but remained scoreless when it was unable to connect with the net - the second straight game in which this has happened to the Eagles.

Volleyball still undefeated in PL

The volleyball team moved its record to 3-0 in the Patriot League when they won 3-2 against Navy Friday night. The Eagles traveled to Annapolis, Md., with determination and intensity, ready to maintain their unblemished league record. Despite struggling at points, AU finished the match, winning three out of the five games.


FANS IN THE STANDS - Showing their dedication to and pride in AU athletics, Eagle fans get decked out in blue to cheer on men's soccer. Phil Reeves, an event where AU fans can come out and show their school spirit, took place Saturday.

Men's soccer defeats Army

The stands were buzzing on both sides of the field as the men's soccer team took on Army Saturday for the Patriot League opener. The Eagles conquered their opponent's noteworthy defense for a 2-1 win. For much of the early half of the game, both teams were locked in back-and-forth play.

Contrary to what many Americans may think, British pubs and American bars are very different. To the average American, it seems as though pubs and bars have the same function - places people go to drink and then stumble home. However, pubs in London are much more than just a place to go for Friday night's happy hour.

Men's soccer loses 1-0 after unsuccessful attempts on goal

Despite multiple scoring attempts, the men's soccer team was unable to capture a win during the 1-0 game against William and Mary Tuesday. The Eagles came straight from a tough loss on Saturday to Virginia Commonwealth University. The intensity and quality of the team's performance didn't waiver as the Eagles outshot the Tribe with 11 total attempts compared to the nine taken by the players of William and Mary.
