In their season opener against George Washington University and Catholic University, the men's and women's swim teams collectively had 13 individual victories in the nonscored competition and added three new names to the AU all-time top 10 list.

Senior Meghan Thiel led the way for the women's team, recording a win Friday night in the 500 free. She ended 12 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher with a time of 4:59.56. Thiel also earned eighth on American's all-time top 10 chart with her 200 free time of 1:54.70.

Senior Dan Nagelberg led the men's team, scoring a victory in the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.96, seconds before the second place finisher. Nagelberg also won the 1650 free by nearly 40 seconds with a time of 17:17.94.

Freshmen Dorothy Issacs, Mary Margaret Lopez and Jessica Balance showed off their skills, proving they have what it takes to compete on the collegiate level. Issacs recorded her first-ever Eagle win with a time of 2:12.06 for the 200 IM. The freshman also took hold of 10th on AU's all-time top 10 list with her 100 free time.

Lopez's first collegiate win came early Saturday morning in the 100 fly. The freshman had a winning time of 59.92, defeating a GW swimmer by two seconds.

Balance gained her victory in the 200 fly. The freshman took hold of first with 2:14.51, less than four-tenths of a second away from second place.

On Nov. 10, the Eagles will face their first Patriot League opponents. AU will travel to the U.S. Naval Academy to face Navy, Bucknell and Lafayette.

Correction: The accompanying photo caption misidentifies the swimmer as Molly Bohmer. The swimmer was senior Melinda Gilbert.
