Former AU scholar faces deportation

Deportation trials began Jan. 23 for former School of International Service scholar-in-residence Gao Zhan, who is serving a sentence for spying for the Chinese government. In 2003, she admitted to selling over $500,000 worth of military-grade microprocessors to a Chinese government agency.

American University will formulate a terms of use policy for the popular student website Facebook, next month. The plan comes amidst growing interest of employers in using Facebook to garner information about potential new hires. The university wants students to be ofiicially made aware of the consequences of their online posts.

Lawmakers must change the way they deal with lobbyists and work more to serve the public in order to regain Americans' trust in the government, said Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) at a Lobbying Reform Summit Thursday cosponsored by AU's Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies and the Committee for Economic Development.

Home showcase for wrestlers

Heavyweight wrestler Adam LoPiccolo avenged an earlier loss and won his match by pinning his ranked opponent as AU won all but one of its matches to beat Sacred Heart Sunday, 37-6 The sophomore, who was ranked 13th in his class by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, faced off against Payam Zarrinpour, who was ranked 11th among heavyweights.

There's a Frank Sinatra song my mom used to sing when I was a kid that could be a pretty apt analogy to what's going on with AU wrestler Josh Glenn these days. Last semester, studying faulty arguments I was given a chart that made me laugh. On one axis was the global temperature showing a gradual increase. On the other was the number of pirates world-wide decreasing as the temperatures increased. The two things have nothing to do with each other and so I laughed.

More than a memory, Less Than Jake strikes back

Veteran ska/punk band Less Than Jake played a sold-out show at D.C.'s 9:30 club Friday, the third night of their latest U.S. tour. The 9:30 club was jam-packed with people of all ages ready to start their weekend with thrashing around a mosh pit to the upbeat sounds of Less Than Jake, a band that's remained popular since it came out of Florida more than 10 years ago.

Minimum meal plan to be required for on-campus sophomores

The Class of 2009 will be required to buy at least a 150-block meal plan next year and sophomores living on campus will be required to purchase at least a 75-block meal plan. In February 2005, Housing and Dining Programs decided to make meal plans mandatory for the Class of 2009's first two years at AU, however there was no minimum meal block requirement This year, only 82 sophomores live on campus and do not have a meal plan, said Julie Weber, executive director of housing and dining.

So last week got off to an inauspicious start as the Steelers upended the Broncos, but I'm back to try my luck again this week. Truth: Kobe Bryant will score 80 points again this season. Why not? The guy is out-of-this-world good, he's got no teammate who's worth anything, and he has no problem hoisting up 50 shots a game.

Excessive iPod use damaging to ears

AU students are not concerned about a recent study that showed excessive use of the Apple iPod's ear bud headphones might be related to the increase of hearing loss among the younger generation. "I'm not worried at all," said Jacqueline Christy, a sophomore in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The majority of AU students are just beginning to plan their spring breaks, focusing the trips on sunshine, tourist traps and fly honeys. Meanwhile, somewhere between 60 to 90 graduate and undergraduate students have had theirs in the works since before the weather was cool enough to miss sunshine in the first place, centering their trips around global social justice issues.
