Three's company with AU a cappella

AU's a cappella scene is typically defined by three groups: Treble in Paradise, Dime a Dozen and On a Sensual Note. Each is equally popular and equally dynamic, and audiences are usually only able to see one at a time. On Friday night in the Kay Spiritual Life Center, students and fans alike were treated to a triple threat of all three.

Faculty nominees for search announced

The faculty members for the Presidential Search Committee will be elected by the end of next week, according to Faculty Senate Chair Jonathan Loesberg. The three elected faculty members will serve under board Chairman Gary Abramson on a committee that will choose a permanent replacement for Interim President Neil Kerwin.

Remembering the Lessons of Sept. 11

It's hard to believe that it has already been five years since the shocking events of Sept. 11, 2001 occurred. As with President Kennedy's assassination for our grandparents and the Challenger explosion for our parents, most of us will always remember where we were when we first heard of the horrendous attack against our nation.

Letter to the editor

At freshman orientation, we are taught that American University encourages diversity. We learn that this campus is a safe zone for race, gender, sexual orientation and ideology. This is no longer the case, however. This August, TDR has become uninviting for conservative students on campus.

Youthful voices resound in fledgling music scene

There's something so innocent, so soothing and adorable, about the voice of a child. Whether shouting anthems about Harry Potter over a drum machine, playing deceivingly adult indie rock or crooning subtly racist White Nationalist folk songs, music performed by children is too sincere to write off as silly or forgettable.

Women's soccer shutout in first loss of season

The AU women's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season Sunday afternoon, losing to N.C. State in the finale of the Wolfpack Invitational. This loss snapped the season opening-winning streak of four games, which had been the best opening of a season for the Eagles' in the seven-year tenure of head coach Michael Brady.

Men's soccer keeps home win streak alive, beat Loyola 2-1

The AU men's soccer team continued their undefeated play at home with a 2-1 win over Loyola (Md.) on Sunday, extending their home winning streak to three games and evening their overall record at 3-3. After back and forth play to open the game, the Eagles finally got on the board.

9/11 Unity Walk joins different faiths, cultures

An Islamic call to prayer in a Jewish synagogue set the tone for the 9/11 Unity Walk, an event designed to bring hundreds of people together from different faiths in honor of the anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. The event, now in its second year, took place yesterday at various churches, mosques, synagogues and other religious buildings along Massachusetts Avenue, including the National Cathedral, the Gandhi Memorial and the Islamic Center.

Campus brief: Student Government begins new term

The Undergraduate Senate gaveled in a new term on Sunday with only eight of the 30 senators present. The Student Government executives presented summaries of their achievements over the summer as well as what they hope to accomplish in the coming weeks. SG President Ashley Mushnick spoke on some of her summer accomplishments, continuing former SG president Kyle Taylor's DVD initiative, Eagle Flicks, a rental system that will offer thousands of movie titles for AU students that will arrive in the coming weeks and be located in Mary Graydon Center.

Changes to Facebook prompt new privacy settings

Student frustrations concerning the new changes to Facebook.com have caused Facebook's creator to add increased privacy settings. At midnight Sept. 4, Facebook.com members noticed a more public display of personal information with the new News Feed and Mini-News Feed features.

The American University women's volleyball team finished a frustrating run at the Golden Bear Invitational in California this past weekend, falling to top-20 teams Cal and Pepperdine in their first two games and Colorado State in their last. Abroad programs transferred to Office of Provost

AU Abroad and Abroad at AU are now managed by the Office of the Provost because the programs have developed to their "mature" phase, said Sara Dumont, director of AU Abroad and Abroad at AU. "The work we have accomplished over the past three years under OIA [Office of International Affairs] have led us to a point where we have a comprehensive set of strong study abroad offerings around the world, and that is certainly here to stay," Dumont said.

Lounges-turned-dorms to be vacated today

Every year the study lounges on Anderson floors 2 and 6 are used as temporary housing for students who plan to live off-campus but have yet to find a place to live. Temporary housing is open on the second floor for males and the sixth floor for females during the first three weeks of the semester.

Critical Mass: 14 years of activism and bikes

Fourteen years since its inception and still riding strong, Critical Mass, a group that sees itself as more of an idea than an organization, promotes the use of environmentally friendly modes of transportation like bicycles. Similarly, AU's own Dinosaurs Against Fossil Fuels not only participates in the local Critical Mass ride each month, but also advocates the use of "alternative transportation among students" and the promotion of "responsible consumption and alternative transportation through creative means.

National SAT scores fall, AU unaffected

Across the nation, the average score on the reading and math sections of the newly revamped 2006 SAT demonstrated the largest decline in 31 years, according to a report from the College Board. This year, the College Board, a non-profit organization that administers the SAT, expanded the test by adding a writing section, changing the former verbal portion into a critical reading section and keeping the former math section.

Grade: B- Rainer Maria's capabilities became evident after the release of their breakthrough second album, "Look Now Look Again." In their latest record, "Catastrophe Keeps Us Together," the band continues down the road of punk and emo-influenced indie-pop.

Students found AU's first peer-edited online journal

A new student-run academic journal for AU undergraduates will release its first issue Sept. 19, said Taylor Robinson, a junior in the School of Public Affairs and the College of Arts and Sciences and one of the founders of the online "Clocks and Clouds" journal.
