Hats off to SUB for starting off right

Simply put, SUB is doing a fantastic job. This year's SUB staff have already accomplished more in three weeks than last year's staff accomplished all year. We've already had Ted Leo and Phantom Planet and can look forward to Ben Folds coming in November. Though the acts might not appeal to every AU student, they certainly draw wider audiences than the Roots and completely forgettable Tavern shows did in years past.

Fires on Metro tracks slow red line traffic

Two small fires on a rail track near the Tenleytown-AU Metro station caused delays on the red line for more than an hour Tuesday evening. The fires, which both occurred on the Glenmont-bound tracks, were spontaneous, quick-burning fires often referred to as flashovers, according to Metro spokesperson Steven Taubenkibel.

Zach Braff's latest may leave viewers wishing he had just stuck to writing a sequel to 'Garden State.'

New romantic comedy sadly a 'Braff'-able effort

It's hard being a white male who is approaching the age of 30. Well, maybe not, but at least that's what the makers of "The Last Kiss" would like the viewer to believe. In fact, it's the main basis behind the characters and their plight. Written by Paul Haggis, the writer behind "Crash" and "Million Dollar Baby," and based on the 5-year-old Italian film "L'Ultimo Bacio," the film plays like a movie for guys who want to be in touch with their feelings but don't know how.

Correction

In a Sept. 11 article titled "9/11 Unity Walk joins different faiths, cultures," it was incorrectly stated that Professor Akbar Ahmed was recently nominated by his native country of Pakistan to be Secretary General of the United Nations. Ahmed's nomination is not official and at this point it "is merely rumors and newpaper reports," according to Ahmed.

Three's company with AU a cappella

AU's a cappella scene is typically defined by three groups: Treble in Paradise, Dime a Dozen and On a Sensual Note. Each is equally popular and equally dynamic, and audiences are usually only able to see one at a time. On Friday night in the Kay Spiritual Life Center, students and fans alike were treated to a triple threat of all three.

Remembering the Lessons of Sept. 11

It's hard to believe that it has already been five years since the shocking events of Sept. 11, 2001 occurred. As with President Kennedy's assassination for our grandparents and the Challenger explosion for our parents, most of us will always remember where we were when we first heard of the horrendous attack against our nation.

Letter to the editor

At freshman orientation, we are taught that American University encourages diversity. We learn that this campus is a safe zone for race, gender, sexual orientation and ideology. This is no longer the case, however. This August, TDR has become uninviting for conservative students on campus.

Youthful voices resound in fledgling music scene

There's something so innocent, so soothing and adorable, about the voice of a child. Whether shouting anthems about Harry Potter over a drum machine, playing deceivingly adult indie rock or crooning subtly racist White Nationalist folk songs, music performed by children is too sincere to write off as silly or forgettable.
