Students 'die-in' against Iraq

Student activists staged a "die-in" last night in Mary Graydon Center, during which they laid on the floor of the lobby to protest the Iraq war. Students from the Community Action and Social Justice Coalition wore all black clothing for the event, which was meant to draw attention to the lives lost in the Iraq war and raise student awareness about the situation, according to Jenna Robson, a freshman in the School of International Service.

Op-Ed: Obama offers all but real change

Imagine this: Before the 2008 election, the devil appears at a meeting between Democratic and Republican leaders and presidential hopefuls. Now imagine that the devil makes a deal with the first politician - the prize is guaranteed party power and unity for the next 50 years, and the price is the cost of one single American life.

AMERICOMEDIC - Freshmen Kelsea Edgerly and Will Zeman make their Players debuts in "The Complete History of America (Abridged)." The show condenses over 500 years of American history into an hour-and-a-half spectacle of politics, comedy and satire, poking

AU Players teach American history lesson

In a time when many are focused on the future of America, the AU Players take a step backward and look at the history of America through their first performance of the semester, "The Complete History of America (Abridged)." Through skits, songs and mime, the six-member cast brought the audience an entirely irreverent and hilarious version of where the United States of America's roots lie.

TRIFECTA- AU's Garrison Carr launches one of his trademark three-pointers last night in the game against Navy. However, it was not enough to prevent the Eagles' second straight home loss.

Men's basketball loses 2nd straight at Bender

The men's basketball team continued its struggling season, losing to the Navy Midshipmen 77-66 at home for the first time since 1991. From the start, Navy was easily the more energetic team, as the Midshipmen gave AU struggles with both their zone and full court man-to-man defenses.

DO OR DIE - Welsh progressive power-pop quintet Super Furry Animals delivered a sonically flat performance Sunday night at the 9:30 club. Their showmanship did not disappoint, but ballad after ballad bored listeners.

Eclectic lineup an odd mix for lackluster 9:30 club show

An odd crowd gathered to see an equally odd lineup when the Super Furry Animals, known for their progressive power-pop, played the 9:30 club Sunday night. The floor was surprisingly packed for an early show, but the swarm that assembled appeared to be equally as intrigued by SFA as it was with backup help from electronic post-punkers Holy Fuck and eclectic indie rockers, The Fiery Furnaces.

Review: Me and You and The World: B-

Dave Barnes "Me and You and The World" Sounds like: A hopeless romantic steeped in gospel, country and soul. Dave Barnes delivers more of his fan-beloved gospel-inspired country on "Me and You and The World," due April 1 of this year. His Southern roots are as apparent as ever as he melds genres, creating a synthesis of sound that leaves audiences tapping their feet and humming along.

Letter to the editor

I suspect there will be videos surfacing on YouTube from the endorsement of Sen. Obama by Edward Kennedy. Although, considering the cynicism of those who use and post on YouTube with regularity, I suspect the tenor of that post will not elevate or celebrate the magnitude of the "momentous occasion.

Staff editorial: AU's Social Security blunder

Let's be blunt: There's absolutely no excuse for the university's mishandling of students' Social Security numbers in the McKinley Building. The boxes, which an AU student found last week next to containers filled with trash, had been sitting in the hallway for an unspecified amount of time, with only a piece of printer paper protecting students' personal information from misuse.

What a travesty: Closings save D.C. public schools

In November, D.C. Mayor Fenty and School Chancellor Michelle Rhee announced a plan to reduce the number of operational public schools in the District from 143 schools to 121 schools in an effort to redirect scarce funds. The plan is expected to reassign 5,000 public school students to other schools.

New coach, new attitude, new outlook

Most of the media chatter about the Washington Capitals' chances in the 2007-2008 season was relatively positive. For the first time since the fire sale of 2004, when the club shed expensive and under performing talents like Jaromir Jagr, Robert Lang and franchise mainstay Peter Bondra, optimism was present for at least a playoff berth.

Review: Angler: D+

Loom "Angler" Sounds like: A schizophrenic violinist chased by an angry mob with flame-throwers - in a bad way. When I listen to an album for the first time, I hope that there will be something I'm left humming. Loom's "Angler" makes that goal entirely impossible.

Life in the district: Gay bars: A stylish, more fun alternative

I realize that this probably makes me a freakish mutant unworthy of writing a column, but until very recently, I had never been to a gay bar or club. Actually, that's still true, but last week, I did experience the next best thing: a gay night at a regular club, complete with rapping drag queens and about 400 guys with great hair.

The Mars Volta "The Bedlam in Goliath" Sounds like: Prog-rock meets jazz fusion meets Latin groove Music enthusiasts love to hate The Mars Volta - it's easy, after all. Even the most devoted Mars Volta fan is skeptical about their new material.
