The Undergraduate Senate passed the smoking bill during its meeting Sunday.
The bill will create smoke-free courtesy zones across campus, at all building entrances, bus stops and during densely populated outdoor events and emergency evacuations. The bill calls for the university to create a campus-wide awareness campaign and to construct smoking shelters, cigarette receptacles and courtesy-zone signs across campus.
The senate amended the bill by adding a clause encouraging the executive branch to continue funding the courtesy campaign each year.
The senate passed "A Bill to Protect the Health of the AU Community and Foster Understanding" 19-7-0. SG President Joe Vidulich will now consider whether to sign the bill into law or veto it.
The senate also passed "A Bill to Amend the Election Protocol." The bill was amended to allow for the senate to decertify the specific races within SG elections based on voter disenfranchisement or corruption within the voting process.
After much deliberation, the senate elected Andrew MacCracken, a senator for the School of Public Affairs, as the chair of the committee on Student Oversight and Accountability.
Additionally, the senate passed a bill to transfer the remaining Founders' Week funds to the Vice President's general fund. SG Vice President Paul Grever said he plans to use the additional funds to sponsor the Spring Fling and to subsidize the ticket costs for upcoming basketball games.
Grever also said he plans to have mini-golf and root beer floats on the quad March 26.
SG Comptroller Amanda Hesse said the bike-lending program has been delayed to holdups on the administration side, but will begin within the next two weeks after advertisements are published.
The next senate meeting takes place Sunday at 2:30 in the Kogod School of Business, room 118.
