Solo titles highlight track effort

The AU men's and women's track teams picked up six individual wins over the weekend at the Centennial Track Meet on the campus of Mount St. Mary's University. Four of the victories came from the men's squad. Junior Carlos Jamieson picked up a win in the 800-meter run, finishing the course with a time of 1:51.

Dear readers, As the school year draws to a close, The Eagle is in a time of transition like many of you. I am pleased to introduce you all to The Eagle's editor in chief for the 2008-2009 school year, Jimm Phillips. Jimm, who worked as the managing editor for news this past semester, has worked at The Eagle since his freshman year as a staff writer, assistant editor and desk editor.

Bodies drip, backs twist and limbs extend in all directions as hands grasp desperately onto wet skin. "Push back, lean back, fall back, more back, way back - change!" shouts the energetic voice over the microphone. These people are not in hell; they are practicing hot yoga at the Bikram Yoga College of India's studio in Tenleytown.

Sub Pop label vaults grunge to mainstream

Punk took nearly two decades to hit the mainstream. When it finally did, the bands that popularized it were not playing alternative-country; they were playing grunge. This happened for one specific reason. "There was a real indie ethic in the '80s that you weren't supposed to be proud of having hit records or being a hit machine," Bruce Pavitt said in the grunge documentary "Hype!" Pavitt and his friend Jonathan Ponemant changed all that when they founded Sub Pop records, a label based in Seattle whose primary goal was to spread the grunge sound to more people.

Letter to the editor

This past Thursday, Mr. DeVries wrote an op-ed espousing the view that humans had a moral obligation to be vegan. I believe Mr. DeVries overlooked a critical issue while on his self-righteous moral campaign: The hundreds of millions of animals killed during crop production and harvest.

Senate passes 2008-2009 SG budget

The Undergraduate Senate passed the Student Government's 2008-2009 budget during its meeting yesterday, which reduced the Student Union Board's funding by nearly $7,000 and increased Women's Initiative's budget by $3,000 from last year's allocations. The senate reduced SUB's budget allocation this year from $172,625 to $165,750, according to Barron Weyerhaeuser, chair of the senate's budget committee.

Hallinan and Lilley awarded PL Runners of the Week Patriot League conference officials announced that seniors Steve Hallinan and Kate Lilley were named the Patriot League runners of the week for their efforts at last week's Bison Outdoor Games. Both took home the top spot in their respective 1500-meter races; Hallinan finished with a time of 3:44.

R.E.M. revs up sound, music career with 'Accelerate'

R.E.M. "Accelerate" Warner Bros. Records Inc. Sounds like: An alt/indie roller coaster with clever lyrics. Grade: B "Accelerate," R.E.M.'s newest record, may be the most aptly titled collection of songs so far this year. Its 11 tracks, clocking in at a puny 39 minutes, make up the band's 14th studio album and their first in four years.

In "Study: Adjuncts, big classes may discourage freshmen," professor Whiting Wicker was paraphrased as saying "An AU adjunct teaches up to three courses per semester and must have a doctoral degree and hold office hours. While they teach less than full-time professors, the university also pays them proportionally less.
