Student representatives from D.C. area universities met Sept. 9 with three Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority administrators and John Childers, president and CEO of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area, to discuss implementing a student Metro discount.

Letter to the editor: Knepper sets up straw man

Columnist Alex Knepper sets up a straw man when he claims that liberals are concerned more with gay marriage in the West than anti-homosexual persecution in other countries such as Iran. He ignores the numerous causes championed by the left long before they were mainstream, such as genocide in Darfur, torture in former Soviet states, and child trafficking in Southeast Asia.

Letter to the editor: Inferiority is in the eye of the xenophobic

Alex Knepper's Sept. 18 opinion demonstrates an ethnocentric, xenophobic, and dare I say it, racist attitude. His article serves no purpose other than to denigrate and alienate other cultures and create an "us versus them" mentality. His assertion that "the West" is somehow "superior" and that other cultures are "inferior" is outrageous.

AU alumnus David Drobis will receive the Arthur W. Page Society's 2008 Hall of Fame award, according to a press release from the society. Drobis will receive the award for his outstanding achievements in the public relations field, specifically for his outstanding work with Ketchum, the agency where he worked for 36 years, according to a press release.

Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee John McCain's differing educational platform policies would affect all college students in universities across the country; still, many AU students are currently unaware of what either candidate's policies entail.

Sarah Palin's support for abstinence-only education is out of touch with young people in general and her children in particular. Especially now that her own 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, you would think that she would realize how dangerous an abstinence-only education can be to young people.

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe signed a power-sharing deal in Harare Monday, agreeing to make rival Morgan Tsvangirai the prime minister. It is the first time in 28 years Mugabe will share his power, The Washington Post reported. Both leaders agreed to work together to fix the failing economy.

OneVoice speakers urge Israel-Palestine compromise

Rami Rabayah, a member of OneVoice Palestine, and Yaniv Sasson, a member of OneVoice Israel, gathered in the Woods-Brown Amphitheatre Wednesday as part of the OneVoice International Education Program, which aims to promote hope for the future and urgency for a comprehensive resolution between their two countries.

Aussie folk jigs stateside

Xavier Rudd, an Australian alt-rocker, didgeridoo guru and environmental activist, played an absolutely wild set at the 9:30 club Sunday night in support of his new album, "Dark Shades of Blue." Rudd, who is a platinum artist in Australia and has increased in popularity in the United States since his debut here five years ago, has played to sold-out crowds across Australia, Asia, Europe and North America.

Campus brief

The International Student and Scholar Services office released a cookbook, "Tales of Taste: Family Recipes from Around the World," which includes recipes from around the world that various members of the AU community submitted. Senem Bakar, assistant director of ISSS and creator of the cookbook, said she got the idea around Thanksgiving last year, when she overheard several students who work in the ISSS department talk about foods that they missed from home.

Metro brief

Smithsonian officials awarded the National Zoo its five-year accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums on Monday, following almost five years of renovations to the park, according to ABC News. Accreditation, tabled in 2003 due to a lack of funding and maintenance issues, was reestablished in 2004, ABC News reported.

As with most of the positions members of the "compassionate" and "nonjudgmental" intelligentsia take, multiculturalism is exclusively the domain of wealthy, mostly white intellectuals, as opposed to people who deal with actual problems. Multiculturalism is the doctrine that it is not proper to negatively judge how any society conducts its affairs.

Field hockey falls to rival Univ. of Md. on 2-1 score

The No. 14 AU field hockey team fell to rival No. 2 Maryland Wednesday afternoon, surrendering two second-half goals in a 2-1 defeat. The loss drops the Eagles to 3-3 on the season. AU had won one of their previous 32 meetings with Maryland, but the team came into the game looking to change history.

Women's soccer team falls to Richmond on own goal

The AU women's soccer team lost a 1-0 nail-biter to the University of Richmond on Tuesday afternoon. The loss drops the Eagles' record on the season to 3-3-1. AU controlled the opening minutes of the game, taking the ball deep into Spiders territory but were unable capitalize on their efforts.

College costs continue to rise

As everything from milk to gas continues to increase in cost, AU's average tuition cost rose by 6 percent this academic year, an increase that is in line with the national trend for tuition hikes. AU's average tuition cost for full-time students this academic year rose to $32,816.

Congressman helps celebrate KPU's 40th anniv.

Students celebrated the Kennedy Political Union's 40th anniversary on campus Tuesday, while an alumnus celebrated his alma mater's political speakers bureau in the halls of Congress. Rep. James P. McGovern, D-Mass., who was KPU's director during the 1980-1981 academic year, honored AU on the floor of the House of Representatives Tuesday, declaring that KPU is an organization that is actively committed to "the expansion of political awareness and engagement.

Confusion, rather than terror, seems to dominate in Neil LaBute's "Lakeview Terrace," which fails to live up to the suspense prominent in its preview. Samuel L.
