"The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" correspondents Jason Jones and Samantha Bee hosted a focus group of undecided voters for the third and final presidential debate. Their intent was to ridicule the television networks that employ such focus groups and to laugh at the indecisive, bewildered participants.

Roaches raid the Berks

AU students who live in the Berkshire Apartments may be paying for unwanted roommates - cockroaches. Some AU students who live in the Massachusetts Avenue building have reported bug infestations in their apartments. The cockroach influx has mainly occurred because of a lack of proper apartment sanitation.

AU can learn from GW's mistakes

George Washington University recently sent out an e-mail alert to their students to inform them of eight separate accounts of sexual assault that had been reported over the last few weeks. These e-mails are all too familiar to AU students who have had to sift through our own spate of Public Safety e-mail alerts.

National brief

The federal appeals court ruled Monday to halt the release of 17 Chinese Muslims detainees held at Guantanamo Bay. The court will wait to hear further argument before detainees can be released into the United States, the Washington Post reported. The Uighur men, who China considers to be terrorists, have been held for seven years at Guantanamo.

Several schools increase financial aid packages

As a result of the stock market downturn, three universities have announced hefty increases in their financial aid packages, however, AU is not among those to change procedure. Texas A&M University, Boston University and Vanderbilt University will increase the aid that most students receive.

Semin's fast start helps him lead Caps

By netting six goals in the first five games, he has become one of the premier left-wingers in the National Hockey League. No, we are not talking about Alexander Ovechkin, but rather his countryman Alexander Semin. This season, Semin has stepped up as the team's leading scorer and as one of the most explosive players on the bench.

AU students follow trend of living on campus

AU Housing and Dining Programs has seen an increase in the past three years of returning students who seek on-campus housing - numbers that are in line with a national trend of upperclassmen seeking on-campus housing at colleges across the country. James Baumann, director of communication and marketing for the Association of College and University Housing Officers-International, said his organization has seen an increase in the number of upperclassmen-oriented residence halls.

Women's soccer brief

The women's soccer extended its unbeaten streak to a season-high three games following a scoreless draw against Patriot League-leading Navy on Friday. The tie pushes the Eagles record to 5-9-2 on the season and 2-1-1 in the Patriot League. Navy took a 13-6 advantage in total shots but senior goalkeeper Kelsey Wiggins was able to make two saves to preserve shutout.

Citing CNN and CBS poll numbers and replacing other pundits' opinions with his own, Shelly declared all of the vice presidential and presidential debates to be overwhelming Democratic victories.

AU students may join youth panel

AU students have the opportunity to participate in a youth panel that will discuss the upcoming presidential election that will be filmed and shown on Al-Jazeera English. The panel will be part of the daily interview show "Riz Khan," and will feature six college-age people from around the country, consisting of two Democrats, two Republicans and two independents.

More attacks reported near D.C. college campuses

The man suspected of committing sexual assaults on students off campus near AU has not yet been caught and is suspected of committing similar attacks on students near other campuses like Georgetown University and George Washington University, according to AU Public Safety Director Chief Michael McNair.

Field hockey brief

The AU field hockey team took home two victories over the weekend, defeating Bucknell University 4-0 Saturday and Towson University 4-1 Sunday. The wins helped the Eagles improve to 8-6 overall and 3-0 in the Patriot League. Senior attacker Irene Schickhardt was instrumental in the victory over the Bison, tallying her ninth and 10th goals of the season to pace the Eagles to a 4-0 victory.

I find that a huge problem for people who come to college is whether or not to break up with your significant other from home. Since it's the fall semester, I also assume that a lot of freshmen are possibly encountering this situation. I suppose this is a touchy subject because every situation is obviously different, but I'd like to throw in my two cents.

Provost Scott A. Bass is reorganizing the way in which the provost's office works, he announced in an e-mail to the AU community Oct. 14. One of the main complaints he has received from faculty is that they are "overly centralized," and are too focused on decision-making, something that has hindered their "innovation and entrepreneurship," according to the e-mail.
