Protestors swarm Munich's city center

·

The way leading to the Marienplatz, Munich's central square, recalled images of an extravagant celebrity entrance - only a subway platform served as the red carpet and the paparazzi were fully laden police commandos lining both sides. On any other day the square would be overflowing with tourists and pedestrians.

Home cookin' Bender style

·

Duke University's Cameron Indoor Stadium, UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, University of Pennsylvania's Palestra. These are what most college basketball fanatics think about when they think of home court advantage, the arenas that bring up images of half-naked, painted-chest, jumping and clapping students willing their teams to victory.

UDC does tuition tango

Plans to increase tuition costs at the University of the District of Columbia from $3,800 to $7,000 have UDC students up in arms - and rightfully so. A nearly 100 percent increase in tuition is not acceptable at any institution of learning at any time. A nearly 100 percent increase in tuition at a public university dedicated to open access is ridiculous.

Lee's D.C voting column misrepresents argument

While I agree with Jong Eun Lee in his Feb. 23 column "D.C. voting needs creative solution" that D.C. voting rights is a tricky issue, I do not believe he fully understands what the actual argument is about and what the consequences of retrocession would be.

UDC protests continue

Students at the University of the District of Columbia continue to protest a potential increase in undergraduate tuition to curb the university's financial problems. The UDC Board of Trustees passed a proposal from UDC President Allen Sessoms Feb. 18 to raise the school's tuition from $3,800 to $7,000 for D.C. residents - a measure that many UDC students are strongly against. The proposal also raises tuition prices for students who are not D.C. residents to $14,000.

Historic lessons loom over empire

Afghanistan: where empires go to die. Or so history would make us believe. First, it was the British - fresh from their conquest of India - that attempted to occupy the country in 1839. A short three years and some 20,000 casualties later, the Brits left to try again somewhere else.

Celebs trade Tweets

If you've ever wondered what Rainn Wilson occupies himself with when he's not beet farming as his persona of Dwight on "The Office" or how Tina Fey spends her time between takes as "Girlie Show" producer Liz Lemon on "30 Rock," you need to seriously update your Tweeple.

Letter to the editor: Eagle coverage of staff- produced plays lacking

I was very disappointed that The Eagle failed to write a review for, or even cover, the Department Of Performing Arts' recent production of Noel Coward's "Hay Fever" in the Scene section of their publication. I understand that it is not possible for this paper to cover everything, but I feel that more effort could be made in terms of covering on-campus theater.

D.C. voting needs creative solution

After years of effort, it appears as if those who have long strived for D.C. voting rights might finally have their wish. The U.S. Senate has scheduled a preliminary vote on Feb. 24 on a measure to give D.C. full voting rights in the U.S. House of Representatives.

All students have the right to know

Students still living on-campus who were smart - or obsessive-compulsive - enough to read all the e-mails sent by the AU administration learned Saturday that a student has contracted the notoriously scary disease - tuberculosis. This unwelcome news was e-mailed along with a handy fact-sheet from the Centers for Disease and Control.

Political clubs discuss health care, stimulus

The College Republicans and Democrats exchanged words mostly along party lines on Wednesday night in a debate about the $787 billion stimulus package and President Obama's proposed heath care plan. "Republicanism is about you and I," said David Lindgren, a freshman in the School of International Service and one of the debaters for the College Republicans.

Fruity flapjacks make lips smack

Fruity, funky, folky flapjacks. The idea came to me while I was making blueberry pancakes. I already knew how to make banana pancakes and orange pancakes, both delicious. Why not combine all three recipes? So I conducted this food experiment. Doubling the recipe, we ended up making at least 20-25 pancakes while listening to folk music on my laptop - hence the title of the dish.

AU redefines beauty

Media outlets define the idea of beauty. The size zero woman in a barely-there outfit with long, flowing hair appears on every ad page of every magazine. Close your eyes and you can picture her because her image has been burned into your brain. However, a movement has begun in which living beauty is recognized.

Despite a slow start, AU senior guard Garrison Carr's game-high 28 points helped lead the Eagles past their rival, College of the Holy Cross Saturday. Both teams came out at the beginning of the game and struggled to get their offenses going. After five minutes, both teams had a combined total of 16 rebounds and only eight points.

'Halo Wars' expands horizons with RTS

Real-time strategy games typically don't translate well from computers to consoles, as controllers obviously aren't as precise as a mouse. It's not surprising, then, that "Halo Wars" aims to redefine the RTS genre as something different for consoles. "Halo Wars" is best described as the RTS for the "Halo" fan: it's exciting, dynamic and not tremendously complex, sacrificing the scale of the modern PC RTS in favor of easy controls and fluid gameplay.
