Eating and reading cheaply in D.C.

Washington, D.C. is not a cheap city. Compared to smaller cities and towns, the overall cost of living can be intimidating. However, there are ways of getting around these expenses. Rather than frequenting restaurants in trendy sections of the city or shopping for groceries at the Eagle's Nest, look for less crowded places to dine and scout out local stores that offer cheap bargains.

Recent grad produces and directs

Kristen Cornwall, who graduated this May with a degree in theater, began the summer intending to direct a show. She planned on eventually going to graduate school for directing, then starting her own theater company some time five years down the line. But a twist of fate and some disappointing producers changed her plans.

AU asst. coach runs in 1,500 m Olympic semifinals

Sean O'Brien, an AU assistant track coach and former AU track athlete, placed No. 21 of 24 competitors in the 1,500-meter run semifinals at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Sacramento, Calif. on Friday, July 16, according to the USA Track & Field Web site, www.usatf.org.

I'm sorry. Am I the only one who sees what a truly disastrous Olympic games this has been for the United States of America? In the past two weeks, our country could've gone to war, changed the Constitution or raised gas prices higher...and that still would've been better than what actually happened in Athens.

Gurnee replaces Woods as Catholic chaplain

The Rev. William Gurnee will greet the AU community this fall as he takes the place of Roman Catholic Chaplain Keith Woods in the Kay Spiritual Life Center. Gurnee said he was "thrilled" when he found out that Cardinal McCarrick, the archbishop of D.C., had assigned him to AU.

Will President George W. Bush prevail and become a two-term president, or will John Kerry sweep up like he did in the Democratic caucuses? Nick Terzulli, former Student Confederation President, spent his summer working for the Republican National Convention in hopes for the re-election of President Bush.

The years of uncertainty about baseball's Montreal Expos might finally come to a head this month. The Associated Press recently reported that league officials will decide where to put the struggling franchise after the July 13 All-Star Game, and Northern Virginia and D.C. seem to be the frontrunners.

As the home of the federal government, D.C. is the political hub of America. It comes as no surprise, then, that many students who come to AU are politically active. You certainly don't need to be politically active to have an enriching experience at AU, but if you do take an interest in politics, this is a great place to spend four years.

Bill against file-sharing passes in Senate

Congress has been working on a bill that could dramatically aid the Recording Industry Association of America in its quest to stop illegal file-sharing. The bill aims to involve the Justice Department in suing file-sharers while giving the department $2 million to fund the effort.
