Men's team drops two
AU Men's Soccer scored the first goal Maryland has conceded this season on Sunday. But it wasn't enough to uproot the No. 1 Terps, who dismissed AU 2-1 in the Maryland/Adidas classic at College Park.

Sports columnist Nick Chin writes on big events in the U.S. Open tennis tournament.
The Women's Tennis Team opened its fall season in respectable form at the Martha Thorn Invitational Tournament in Morgantown, W.Va., this past weekend. Playing in singles and doubles against opponents from other universities, the Eagles posted several strong showings, led by senior Katarina Kollarova's remarkable trip to the tournament finals for her group.
Sports briefs from around campus: the Womens' Soccer team and AU Field Hockey.
The NFL kicked off with the NFC last Thursday as the Washington Redskins took on the New York Jets. Now it is time to turn attention to the AFC with whom to watch and who will go all the way. The AFC is a much harder conference to decipher than the NFC, but here are my picks: the Miami Dolphins, the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Tennessee Titans, the Oakland Raiders, the Buffalo Bills and the Baltimore Ravens.
AU Volleyball went 1-2 this weekend at the Zips Invitational in Akron, Ohio. The Eagles (2-4) scraped by host Akron 3-2 (24-30, 30-27, 26-30, 33-31, 17-15) on Friday. However, they dropped matches 3-0 on Saturday to No. 9 Penn St. (30-19, 30-25, 30-24) and Pittsburgh (32-30, 30-28, 30-19).
AU Men's Soccer finished a respectable but disappointing second place in the D.C. College Cup, routing George Washington 3-0 on Friday before drawing host Georgetown 1-1 on Sunday.
The football season is at last upon us and it is time to take a hard look at the upcoming season with an overview of what to look for, who the division contenders are, who will still be playing in January and who will win the Super Bowl. My picks to make it to the playoffs this year from the NFC are: The Philadelphia Eagles, the Green Bay Packers, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Seattle Seahawks, the Atlanta Falcons and the New York Giants.
The Women's Field Hockey team dominated the Longwood Lancers, earning a victory for their first game of the season, defeating the Lancers, 4-0. Last Sunday's game at Georgetown showcased sophomore Shannon Goans with one goal and one assist.
There were several factors that made Friday afternoon not exactly an ideal day for playing soccer. After waiting out a 45-minute rain delay, the Lady Eagles took to a flawed field to open their season with a 1-0 win over Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md.
Sports columnist Jesse Epstein discusses the recent drug problems facing college sports and its effect, or lack thereof, at AU.
Briefs from the Eagle Sports Desk on administrative turmoil in AU's athletic department.
It was a banner season for AU Cross Country in 2002 as Samia Akbar qualified for the NCAA championships and the Men's and Women's teams each won their first Patriot League titles. This fall, they are hoping to do it again. Practice begins today for AU Cross Country in the hills of Northwest Washington as the men's and women's squads look to build on last year's success.
AU Men's Soccer closed out their preseason with a scrappy 1-0 exhibition win over Towson at Reeves Field on Sunday Afternoon. Familiar faces carried the afternoon. Junior Andrew Herman, last year's leading goal scorer, beat Tiger 'keeper Zak Thompson in the 44th minute after latching onto a through ball from junior Shawn Kuykendall, last year's assist leader.
Eagles Sports columnist Jesse Epstein says, "For the American Eagles, this fall season brings a clean slate. "A new school year.ÿA new Athletic Director (To Be Announced).ÿ And a new opportunity for many of AU's squads to rise to national prominence."
Every year, our nation's leader gives the State of the Union address, outlining the successes and failures of our country. I'm no president, and I won't talk about a country, but here is the State of the D.C. Sports address from Sports Columnist Jesse Epstein.
AU Women's Soccer has plenty of reason to be optimistic about the upcoming season, if last year's campaign is any indication. Head Coach Michael Brady's Eagles captured their first ever Patriot League Championship last year with wins over Navy and Colgate in the PL Tournament.
New additions to the Women's Volleyball team (26-8 overall) might be the difference between playing in the NCAA Tournament and winning in the NCAA Tournament. Head Coach Barry Goldberg and his team ended the 2002 season undefeated in Patriot League action, 14-0.
