Hoops notes: Adams pumps up the family

·

Although AU coach Jeff Jones praised the Eagles for playing hard Wednesday at Navy, they blew a six-point halftime lead against a team they had not lost to since February 1991 by falling to the Midshipmen, 77-68. According Jones, the loss against Navy made Saturday's Lafayette game even more important.

Third season is the charm

·

With a 6-13 record and an offense that has struggled to consistently score points, the AU men's basketball team hasn't exactly had a successful first half of the season. But one of the major bright spots for the Eagles this season has been the improved play of junior guard Arvydas Eitutavicius, who has transformed from marginal role player to the second leading scorer on the team with 11.

Last of the great ones puts away his skates

Growing up there were four superstars in the four major sports I came to admire and love the most. In basketball there was Michael Jordan, football had Emmitt Smith, baseball had Frank Thomas, and hockey had Mario Lemieux. On Tuesday Mario Lemieux announced his retirement for the second and probably last time.

Men's hoops yields rare loss to Mids

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - The AU men's basketball team did something Wednesday it hadn't done in almost 20 years: lose at Navy. The theme of the 77-68 loss appeared to revolve around breaking streaks. Navy (7-11, 1-4 Patriot League) snapped its winless streak in league play.

Bryant's 81 speaks double truths

So last week got off to an inauspicious start as the Steelers upended the Broncos, but I'm back to try my luck again this week. Truth: Kobe Bryant will score 80 points again this season. Why not? The guy is out-of-this-world good, he's got no teammate who's worth anything, and he has no problem hoisting up 50 shots a game.

Track gets good mileage in Landover

AU mile runners dominated at the Maryland Invitational in Landover, Md., Saturday as senior Keira Carlstrom and junior Brendan Fennell won the women's and men's miles, respectively. Carlstrom had no trouble in the women's mile, breaking out into the lead early.

In London, a high price for food and football

I needed a break. I had been in England for a week and a half and I needed a respite. I wasn't experiencing major culture shock, it was just that the little differences between London and D.C. were starting to get to me. The buses here run on time, the cars drive on the wrong side of the road, and the birds chirp at all hours of the night (there's nothing more unnerving then being woken up at 3 a.

Hoop notes: Winter break unkind to soul-searching AU

It was obvious that AU men's basketball coach Jeff Jones was frustrated after a 71-59 home loss to Yale on Jan. 9. "I don't think our kids can play any harder," he said after emerging from the locker room nearly half an hour following the defeat It was the low point of the Eagles' winter break play in which they went 2-5, only picking up wins at St.

Eagles top Army in extra, extra time

Maybe the AU men's basketball team believed a nine-game winning streak against Army dating back to when Kennedy roamed the West Wing and its 5-11 record were enough for a second straight Patriot League win. But instead it took two overtimes and two game-tying 3-point shots from junior guard Andre Ingram for AU to escape any talk of Army being due with a 65-63 win Wednesday at Bender Arena.

Women falter against Army

The AU women's basketball team continued a disappointing month by losing to the Army Black Knights Tuesday night at Bender Arena, 75-66, to drop to 4-13, 1-3 in the Patriot League. The Eagles used a strong first half to build a two-point halftime lead, but an 12-1 Army run to open the second half put the Eagles behind for good.

Bad calls, sloppy play can't mar Super Bowl

Last weekend, Pittsburgh stunned Indianapolis in a thrilling 21-18 win, while the Broncos ended the Patriots' run as champions with a 27-13 victory. But both games were marred by poor officiating that had fans, the media, coaches and even some players voicing their outrage.

Hoop notes: Jones: Carr has long-range leeway

December in D.C. is cold, and cold means snow, but at Bender Arena Saturday it rained 3's. Twenty-five of them to be exact, and in the AU men's basketball matchup with Towson, that divulged a little secret: Freshman Garrison Carr likes to shoot, and unlike most of his teammates, he's allowed to jack up the 3-ball whenever he wants.

Carr, Eagles rain 3's on Tigers in win

Everyone knew Garrison Carr was known for his shot in high school. It was only in Saturday's men's basketball game against Towson that they found out just how good his shot can be. The freshman guard cruised to a career-high 25 points and made six of AU's record 15 3-pointers in a 74-70 win over the Tigers at Bender Arena.

Women's hoops endures Quakers in overtime

There are certain games where a coach learns about its team, for better or worse. Saturday, AU women's basketball coach Melissa McFerrin learned a lot about her young squad during its resilient 70-68 overtime win over Pennsylvania. The Eagles blew an 11-point halftime lead and Joey Rhoads hit a 3-pointer for the Quakers to send the game into overtime.
