The NBA in Vegas means everyone wins

·

I was sick over the weekend and was lucky enough to stay in and watch 72 hours of the NBA's All-Star weekend from Las Vegas. However, I first have to comment on the shocking elimination of Mr. Boston on "I Love New York." Mr. Boston, who lists "Taxicab Confessions" as one of his favorite shows on his MySpace, was the best thing about one of the best shows on TV.

Baseball: The solution to life's problems?

·

It's been known since the start of time that spring is a symbol of new beginnings. The plants throughout American University are all beginning to sprout. The animals in National Zoo are all giving birth to new offspring and all of the teams of the MLB have another chance to play for the pennant.

Eagle Sports brief: Navy sinks women's hoops

Despite a career-high 24 points from Nicole Ryan, the AU women's basketball team fell to Navy on Wednesday night, 65-58. The loss drops the Eagles into a three-way tie for fourth place with Navy and Lafayette. After giving up the game's opening basket on a three-pointer, the Eagles took its first and only lead of the game on a jumper by Abby Lipskis to go up 4-3.

The Eagles need to win their next two games against Navy and Lafayette in order to secure homecourt advantage for the PL tournament.

First-half struggles plagued the Eagles once again on Saturday as the team fell behind early in their loss to Holy Cross, 61-54. The defeat gives the Crusaders sole possession of third place in the Patriot League and drops AU into a tie with Lafayette for fourth at 5-7 in the league.

Having won their last two games, the Eagles are hitting a stride entering tournament time.

With the most experienced roster in the Patriot League and confidence after a successful offseason trip to Europe, the AU men's basketball team began the season with dreams of winning the school's first Patriot League championship. After starting out the season with a 9-2 record, the Eagles appeared to be ready to make some noise in conference play, but a 3-7 start left the team looking for answers.

Spring training:The return of baseball bitterness

Snow making you sick, depressed, or rowdy? Well, hang on Panama Blue, because spring training baseball is just around the corner, and by obvious extension, so is the spring. Unfortunately, amidst the coming return of America's pastime, one team's fan-base knows that it has no hope of doing anything.

The importance of finding Mr. Wright

Instead of making fun of or complaining about five different sports figures this week, I am instead going to focus my energy into praising one great one: David Wright. Being a Mets fan isn't the easiest thing in the world. Sure, they won a World Series in 1986, but since I was only 13 months old at the time, I didn't get to experience it.

The AU women's basketball team fell again on Saturday afternoon, losing to Colgate 66-53 in Hamilton, N.Y. Last-minute foul call saves men's basketball

After Colgate's Dan Gentile tipped in a miss by teammate Jon Simon with 0.2 seconds remaining, it appeared as though AU was doomed to suffer yet another agonizingly close Patriot League loss. However, Brian Gilmore ran along the baseline before attempting to inbound the ball, drawing defender Kyle Chones right into Arvydas Eitutavicius, who held his ground and drew a foul.

Wrestling drops weekend matches against Maryland, Old Dominion

In a familiar ending, the American University men's wrestling team dropped their fourth straight match on Sunday, losing to Old Dominion by a slim margin in the final bout. American was able to keep a 20-17 lead heading into the heavyweight match, but Old Dominion redshirt freshman Matt Pellar proved to be too much for redshirt junior Evan Murtaugh, who was pinned in 2:04 to give ODU the 23-20 win.

Horrible conditions make Super Bowl worth

While executives at the NFL may have been concerned about the conditions in Miami, after years of seeing championship games played in domed stadiums and under pristine conditions, I was personally very happy to see "monsoon-like conditions" hit during the game.
