Women head to the Cross

·

The best time of the year for sports fans is here. The doldrums of February are about to be replaced by the college basketball excitement that is March Madness. One of the first tournaments is the Patriot League, and the AU Women will take their recent string of strong play up to Worcester, Mass.

You have to look hard when scanning the list of collegiate athletes participating in the NCAA Indoor Track Championships, but AU is there. For many schools, sending athletes to the championships is merely part of the routine, something expected. But other schools, instead of large contingents of competitors, send one or two of their very best students to these races, where they proudly represent their school and are happy to run, toss or jump with names like Drake, Radford or Tennessee-Chattanooga emblazoned across their chests.

Men's hoops season ends in league tourney loss

·

Posted March 7, 2005 Senior Jason Thomas scored just one point in his final college game as AU lost 53-35 to Bucknell in the second round of the Patriot League tournament. Thomas went 0-for-6 from the three-point stripe, while fellow senior Matej Cresnik led the team with 12 points. The Eagles end the season with a record of 16-12, giving them their fourth straight winning season. This year's crop of graduating seniors is AU's first in 30 years to graduate with only winning seasons under their belt.

Spring blooms, death looms

Spring break. For every student, it is different. Some will venture to beach resorts in Florida, Mexico or the Caribbean, tanning all day and partying all night. Others will journey to visit family, friends and scenery that they miss dearly because they haven't seen them in a couple months.

AU sinks Navy for 2nd straight win

Throughout its four-game losing streak this month, AU Men's Basketball struggled to put away opponents late - and that's if it even had a chance from the beginning. But in the final two games of the season, the Eagles seem to have turned things around. AU got 62 points from its five seniors in their final home regular-season game and overcame an intense Navy team to win its second consecutive game, beating the Midshipmen, 84-77, at Bender Arena Saturday.

AU resurgent at PL swim finals

Last year, the AU Swimming and Diving team found itself in an early-season crisis - though nothing as imminent as those engulfing AU's tennis and golf programs - when the athletic department announced it would be phasing out all of the team's 15 scholarships.

Money interrupts pure sport

This week in the world of sports, there were some notable salary cap casualties. The world champion New England Patriots cut cornerback Ty Law, the Buffalo Bills cut quarterback Drew Bledsoe, and American University cut the golf and tennis programs.

Boston's sad losers now sore winners

Growing up in a suburban town just outside Boston, I learned a religious level of admiration for the Red Sox. The flip side of this coin was obviously our never-ending hatred for the Yankees. Our acceptance of this was as natural as the leaves changing color in the fall.

Men end 4-game slide, beat Lehigh 65-61

The AU men's Basketball team finally snapped not one but two four-game losing streaks Wednesday night. The Eagles' 65-61 victory at Lehigh put them back into the win column, a place they haven't been since a Feb. 4 win over Army. AU had lost its last four games, all in the Patriot League.

Golfers look for a diamond in the rough

After a difficult fall season wrought with disappointing finishes, the AU Men's Golf team is looking to rebound with a trip to California and a promising spring season. The Eagles, who placed eighth or lower in three out of four events this fall, have a seven-tournament spring schedule that includes the three-day Intercollegiate at Diablo Grande, a tournament in Patterson, Calif.

AU cuts golf and tennis programs

The AU Athletic Department announced it will cut the men's golf and men's and women's tennis programs after this season, according to a statement released Thursday evening. AU will honor scholarships already given to those students should they decide to stay at AU, but in the future scholarships for those programs, part of AU's total of 80 sports scholarships, will be redirected to other sports that do not meet NCAA maximum scholarship limits, the statement indicates.

AU runs to best-ever PL finish

AU Men's and Women's Indoor Track teams didn't finish the weekend's Patriot League Championships with the most points, but they could be called the competition's most efficient squads. Eagle runners placed first in 10 of their 13 events as the women finished fifth and the men finished third, their best-ever finish in the PL Championships.

AU still ordinary where it counts

Ever since the Eagles swooped down on the Patriot League, they've been a dominant force, right? Well, that is the running narrative around Nebraska Avenue. And yeah, there's some merit to it. AU has won a plurality of league championships since it entered the league when.

For Eagle wrestlers, 1 out of 3 could be worse

In wrestling, if you can't make weight on match day, you can't compete. AU head coach Mark Cody wanted to be sure that his wrestlers could make weight on three straight days, since they will have to at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association championships as well as the national tournament, so he scheduled matches this weekend for three consecutive days.

Eagles edge Leopards, stay in PL pack

There have been prettier games than AU's 58-56 win over Lafayette Sunday. But at this point in the season, a win is a win. Senior forward Chanel Hunt played her strongest game of the season, scoring 13 points, pulling down 9 rebounds and leading a controlled Eagles offense that completed a 10-point second-half comeback to knock off the lesser opponent and stay in contention for the third seed in the upcoming Patriot League tournament.

Good and bad of black legacies

You would be hard-pressed to find a sport whose history over the past 100 years has not provided some meaningful juncture in the struggle for the equality and recognition of blacks in the 20th century. From baseball to football, and more recently golf, diversity in sports is reflected in many of the stunning achievements of pioneering black athletes who graced sports with style and athleticism.
